Three questions about a community tank, not one
Can this fish live with that one is one sentence and three separate questions, and almost every answer online collapses them into a single word. We keep them apart, because two of the three can be settled from published figures and the third cannot.
Does the water suit both?
The narrowest shared temperature band, from the two recorded ranges. This is arithmetic, and it is the question a chart can answer honestly.
Does the layer suit both?
Two animals in the same water are in each other’s way. Our records name a water column for each species, which is where that gets decided.
Does either record refuse?
Sometimes a source states a pairing to avoid, and says why. Forty four pairings on this site are refused on a sentence like that. That is a fact with a citation behind it, and it outranks the arithmetic.
What none of the three answers is temperament in the individual animal. No source we compile from publishes a figure for aggression, so nothing on this page will tell you your betta is safe. It will tell you what the water allows, which is the part that can be checked.
Every pairing, by shared water
Read a cell as the band both records can hold at once. Where a record names the other as a pairing to avoid the cell says never. Where the band is fine and something else is not, the note under the figure says so. Both reasons are printed under the grid. Every cell in it is a figure today, which was not true this morning.

The axolotl band ends at 64 °F and the goldfish band starts at 68, so the coldest fish we hold is four degrees too warm for this animal. Bantam is also the source this record declines on temperature, and our own betta record spans 72 to 86 °F, so the water allows what the sources argue about.
The same two source sentences, other bottom feeders and similar-looking species, and a suckermouth fish is as similar-looking as this site gets. Our bristlenose pleco record is 4 to 6 inches, which is the one size on this list that is not obviously smaller.
This is the pairing people actually build, because two of our sources recommend the bristlenose instead of this fish and the shop sells both. Aquarium Co-Op: bristlenose, rubber lip and clown plecos are all beautiful catfish that stay between 4 to 6 inches in length, and are better suited for the average home aquarium. Aquarium Store Depot: for 90 percent of setups, the bristlenose is the correct pleco. The water works, at 74 to 79 °F. What limits it is a published number: Fishkeeping World says to limit aggression between pleco fish by housing a maximum of two plecos in one tank, so this is a pairing of exactly two and not the start of a collection, and one of the two will end up needing twenty five times the volume of the other.
Aquarium Co-Op names bristlenose plecos among the tank mates for a platy, and our own two records will not support it on water. This record carries 214 to 321 ppm and our bristlenose pleco record carries 71 to 200, so the hardness ranges do not meet at all. The pH meets from 7.0 to 7.5 and the temperature from 74 to 77. A source we cite recommends a pairing our own hardness rows exclude, which is the same shape as the kuhli loach cell on our clown loach record.
Tankora names the common pleco among the suitable tank mates for a redtail catfish, and our bristlenose is a different and much smaller pleco at 4 to 6 inches. No source names it either way, and the water leaves two degrees, so this is arithmetic with a recommendation about a relative rather than about the fish.
The most precise shrimp answer any source on this site has given. Aquarium Co-Op: clown killifish do not seem to eat adult dwarf shrimp, but baby shrimp are fair game. Our cherry shrimp record carries a 30 to 40 mm adult whose young hatch at about a millimeter, so both halves of that sentence apply to the same tank at the same time. The water allows it: temperature meets from 68 to 79 and hardness from 71 to 143 ppm. A colony survives and a generation does not, which is a caution rather than a refusal because our source says so in those terms.
Ours, by inference, and stated as ours. Not one of our five sources names shrimp on either side of this pairing, which is why it is a caution rather than a refusal. What they do say is Aquarium Co-Op’s rule, no small fish or invertebrates small enough to fit in their mouths, and Seriously Fish’s, that this species is not suitable with small species. Our cherry shrimp record carries a 30 to 40 mm adult whose young hatch at about a millimeter, and the temperature bands overlap at 82 °F, so the arithmetic allows a pairing our sources describe in terms that exclude it.
Ours, and the same shape of problem. Seriously Fish allows some freshwater shrimp with this fish; Aquarium Co-Op says no clean up crew. Our own shrimp record adds the figure that decides it for us: the young hatch at about a millimeter, and this is a fish that eats snails out of their shells.
A direct contradiction rather than a judgment of ours. Aquarium Co-Op states that this fish will eat dwarf shrimp while it will leave most snails and larger shrimp alone. Aquarium Store Depot lists shrimp species among its compatible tank mates without qualification. Our cherry shrimp record carries a 30 to 40 mm Neocaridina whose young hatch at about a millimeter, which is the dwarf shrimp Aquarium Co-Op is describing. The bands overlap from 75 to 79 °F, so the water allows what one source refuses and another recommends, and the cell prints the disagreement instead of picking the half we prefer.
Ours, from the same two rules and the size rows. Our chili rasbora record tops out at 20 mm, which ties the ember tetra and the least killifish for the smallest fish on this site, and Aquarium Co-Op excludes anything small enough to fit in a clown loach’s mouth. No source names the pairing, so the cell is a caution and the reason is printed rather than the pairing being refused on our own authority.
Tankarium names snails among the tank mates to avoid and Aquariadise refuses invertebrates as a group, but neither names a species and neither publishes a mechanism for a snail the way both do for a fish flank. Our nerite snail record shares this record’s whole band, so the pairing is printed as one setting only with the two sentences under it.
Aquariadise names other bottom feeders and similar-looking species among the fish to avoid, and an otocinclus is both. No source names it, and our otocinclus record is a 1.4 to 2 inch fish against 5 to 11 here, so the size argument is the same one the refusals rest on with nobody publishing it.
The bands meet across this record entirely, and nothing else does. Seriously Fish keeps this loach with medium-to-large sized, active fishes, and a 35 mm surface fish is neither. No source names the pairing either way, so it is arithmetic without a recommendation behind it.
Aquarium Co-Op names snails among the tank mates for this fish, and our own two records will not support it. Our nerite snail record carries pH 7.5 to 8.5 and this record carries 4.0 to 7.0, so the two ranges do not meet at all, and the hardness only meets if both are read at their extremes. A snail needs carbonate and this fish is published for water with almost none, which is the same failure our platy record found from the opposite end of the pH scale.
The same publisher is on both sides. Aquarium Co-Op names discus among the tank mates on its ram guide, and our discus record carries Aquarium Co-Op naming german blue rams among the fish to avoid. Aqueon and aqua-fish name ram cichlids as suitable there. The bands meet at exactly 85 °F.
Aquarium Source names different types of goldfish among the tank mates it recommends. Aquarium Store Depot writes that there are too many reports of dojo loaches attacking goldfish to ignore. The water is the part that works: the goldfish band, 68 to 74 F, contains this one entirely.
Ours, from the published pH rows rather than from anything either source says: the guppy floor is 7.0 and the ember tetra ceiling is 7.0, so the two records meet at one number and share no range at all. A tank held exactly at neutral suits both and any drift suits one.
Two problems at once. Our ember tetra record carries pH 5.5 to 7.0 against 7.0 to 8.0 here, so the two meet at a single point, and hardness 18 to 179 ppm against 214 to 321, which do not meet at all. Fishkeeping World adds a warning from the other direction: long-finned platy varieties should not be kept with renowned fin-nippers such as tiger barbs and tetras. Our ember tetra record stores peaceful, shoaling from a source describing that species, so the family warning and the species statement point different ways, and the cell prints both.
The one pairing our sources actively recommend and our own rows almost refuse. Aquarium Source, Everything Fishkeeping and Aquarium Store Depot all name the oscar as a tank mate for a flowerhorn, and Aquarium Store Depot asks for 215 gallons minimum before any tank mate goes in at all. Our oscar record carries 75 to 80 °F and this record carries 80 to 86, so the two published bands meet at a single degree, 80. Three sources recommend it and the water leaves one figure to hold, which is the same shape as the goldfish and kuhli loach pairing our tank mates page already prints.
Ours, from two rows this time. The pH ranges meet only at 7.0, and the hardness ranges meet only at 143 ppm, which is the guppy floor and the kuhli loach ceiling. Nothing either source says forbids the pairing; the arithmetic leaves it no room.
Fishkeeping World names gouramis among the animals that eat ramshorn snails. Not one of the four sources on our honey gourami record mentions snails at all, and three of them call that species peaceful. So a source we cite warns about the family while the sources on our own record are silent about it, which is a caution rather than a refusal. Our gourami fish guide adds the mouth-size rule from a fourth source: a dwarf gourami will opportunistically snack on anything that can fit in its mouth.
Two of our four sources name gouramis and they take opposite positions. aqua-fish lists gouramis among the compatible tank mates for this fish. Aquarium Store Depot lists gouramis among the incompatible ones, alongside cichlids and tiger barbs, on the grounds that they are aggressive species. Our honey gourami record carries three sources calling that species peaceful and a fourth saying it is relatively timid, which makes Aquarium Store Depot the odd one out on the temperament rather than on the pairing. The water also needs reading before the list: this record asks for high flow and 75 to 79 °F, and that record asks for still water and 74 to 81.
One source names gouramis among the fish that will eat this plant. Aquarium Breeder lists gouramis, goldfish and herbivorous cichlids; the other four sources do not mention gouramis at all, and none of them names the honey gourami specifically. Our own honey gourami record carries a diet of omnivore, and an insect eater in the wild, with no source calling it a plant eater. So this is one source against a group, and the bands overlap from 74 to 77 °F.
Ours, and it is a caution because of a name. Seriously Fish states that this fish browses black beard algae but shows a preference for fine-leaved, higher plants such as Vesicularia spp. Our java moss record is Taxiphyllum barbieri, a species the trade sold as Vesicularia dubyana for years and which is not in that genus. So the warning names a genus adjacent to the plant we hold, in a hobby that confused the two for decades, and Aquarium Store Depot adds that this fish will pounce on aquarium plants if underfed. The temperature bands overlap completely, 75 to 79 inside the moss record’s 59 to 86, so nothing but the plant name stands between the pairing and a refusal.
The group warning against a species statement, which our snails silo has now argued three times. Fishkeeping World names loaches as animals that eat ramshorn snails. Our kuhli loach record carries Aquarium Co-Op saying of that species, in as many words, that it is not known for eating snails. One source warns about the family and another clears the member, and the cell prints both rather than choosing. The bands meet from 74 to 78 °F.
Two degrees of shared band, and Aquarium Breeder names multiple snail species including nerites among the compatible tank mates for this one. So this is a recommendation the arithmetic almost refuses: our nerite snail record stops at 79 °F and this one starts at 78.
Two sources point in opposite directions. Tankora names the oscar among the fish to avoid; Pet Zone names large South American cichlids among the suitable tank mates, and an oscar is one. Our oscar record is 10 to 12 inches against 47 to 55 here, and the bands share a single degree.
Ours, from a direct contradiction: Seriously Fish names Otocinclus spp. as compatible with this fish, and Aquarium Co-Op says no algae eaters at all. We take the stricter side and mark it a caution rather than a refusal, because one of the two sources recommends the pairing and we are not going to pretend it does not.
Ours, from two published rows. Our otocinclus record carries 36 to 179 ppm against 214 to 321 here, so there is no shared hardness, while the pH meets from 7.0 to 7.5 and the temperature from 70 to 77. No source on either record names the pairing. It is the same failure as the bristlenose cell and it is worth printing twice, because the reason this fish is hard to pair is one row that most keepers never test.
The bands meet at exactly one temperature: this record starts at 78 and our ramshorn snail record stops there. No source names the pairing either way, and both animals want the same hard alkaline water, so what rules it out is one degree of overlap rather than a warning.
How this grid was made
It is ours, and it is derived rather than quoted. Nobody publishes a compatibility grid we could copy, and the ones you find are almost always somebody’s tank written up as a rule. So each cell takes the two recorded temperature ranges, overlaps them, and prints the result: the higher of the two floors to the lower of the two ceilings.
That method has a floor and a ceiling of its own. It cannot invent a figure, and it cannot soften one. When the overlap closes, the pairing is off, and no amount of careful keeping reopens it.
Why this grid was blank in five places
Until the nerite snail record was written, five of the pairings here had no answer, and all five were the same blank: no source we held stated a temperature for that animal, and you cannot overlap a range against nothing. The row printed as empty rather than as a guess.
What closed them was a source, not an estimate. Wikipedia publishes 22 to 26 °C for Vittina natalensis, which is 72 to 79 °F, and the five cells filled the moment that figure was on the record. That is the argument for printing blanks as blanks in one paragraph: the gap was visible, so it was findable, and nobody had to unpick an invented number to close it.
Where each one lives, and what it eats
The layer question and the food question, side by side, for every record. Two animals in the same layer eating the same food is a competition; two in different layers eating differently is a community.

The layer rule, stated as ours
One group per layer is our rule and not a recorded figure, and it is worth naming as such. No source we compile from says two bottom dwellers cannot share a floor. What they do say, over and over, is a group size: six or more of one species for the corydoras, five to six for the kuhli loach, eight to ten for the ember tetra.
Stack two of those in one layer and the arithmetic runs out before the temperament does. Eleven bottom fish in a twenty gallon is not a compatibility problem, it is a volume problem, and it is the reason our stocking tool offers one group per layer.
The size question, honestly
Adult size is the field people use as a proxy for danger, and it is a weak one. The redtail catfish at 47 to 55 inches is the largest animal here by more than twice, ahead of our common pleco record at 24, and it carries three refusals, all of them about size rather than temper; the flowerhorn at 9.5 to 16 carries three as well and the oscar at 10 to 12 carries five, which is roughly what the proxy predicts.
The goldfish carries seven, more than any other record, and not one of them is about aggression: two are temperature, against the angelfish and the axolotl, three are plants it eats, the hornwort, the java fern and our newest plant record, water sprite, and two are about who ends up eaten, the amano shrimp and the oscar. Then the proxy breaks: the siamese algae eater at 3 to 6.3 inches is the largest animal here with no refusal against it at all, and the newest large record, the dojo loach at 6 to 12 inches, carries five, none of them against a fish.
Size matters in one direction that is worth stating: something small enough to be food usually is. The cherry shrimp reaches 1.2 to 1.6 inches as an adult, and its young hatch at about a millimeter, which is the sentence the refusal below actually rests on.
What a compatibility grid cannot tell you
Four things this page will not do, listed because a chart that admits nothing is a chart you cannot calibrate.
Not one of our sources publishes aggression as a figure, so nothing here is a number. Territorial appears on the betta record as a word, taken from the source, and a word is all we can honestly print.
The most common true story in this hobby is a betta that ignored everything for two years and then did not. A grid built from species ranges has no way to hold that, and any page claiming otherwise is guessing on your behalf.
Cover changes outcomes and our records say so: cholla wood and moss on the shrimp record, buried time on the kuhli loach. Two pairings with the same band behave differently in a bare tank and a planted one, and the grid cannot see the difference.
Forty eight records is what is verified today, so the grid above is the whole of what this site can answer. Every other pairing you might want is queued rather than hidden, and the queue is at the bottom of this page.
Questions about fish tank mates
Can a betta live with other fish?
On the water question, yes: the betta range of 72 to 86 °F overlaps every fish record on this site, giving 72 to 82 with the corydoras and the ember tetra and 74 to 79 with the kuhli loach. On the temperament question our source calls the species territorial and states one male, never two, and gives no figure beyond that. The grid above is the part we can stand behind.
Can a betta live with cherry shrimp?
Our records say never, and it is one of forty four refusals on this site. Aquarium Co-Op states that bettas are notorious for going after shrimp; the reason we mark it never rather than risky is that the shrimp’s young hatch at about a millimeter, so a colony has to survive the fish and not just the adults. Most of the rest are diets rather than temperaments: the pea puffer with the nerite snail, the five our dojo loach record added at once against both snails and all three shrimp, and the four the rabbit snail record added against the animals two of its sources name as its predators.
Which pairing on this site is the safest?
Ember tetra with corydoras. They share 72 to 82 °F, they occupy different layers, both records call the species peaceful and shoaling, and neither names the other anywhere. That is every one of our three questions answered from published figures.
Can two bottom dwellers share a tank?
The water allows it: corydoras and kuhli loach share 74 to 79 °F. What runs out is volume, because both records ask for a group. Six corydoras and five kuhli loaches is eleven bottom fish, and the kuhli record already asks for twenty gallons on its own. The third bottom record is the exception that proves the rule: the bristlenose pleco is one fish rather than a group, so it costs a cave rather than a school, and its sources ask for the same twenty gallons.
Why do the nerite snail cells stop at 79?
Because that is the top of its own range. Wikipedia gives 22 to 26 °C for the species, which is 72 to 79 °F, so every pairing with the snail is capped there even where the fish would go warmer. Those five cells were blank until that record was written, which is what a blank on this site is for: it marks the work rather than hiding it.
Do small fish make safer tank mates?
The opposite, if anything. Our two longest fish both reach sixteen inches and neither is refused for its temper: the clown loach carries three refusals and two cautions, every one of them about diet, and the flowerhorn carries three refusals that come from one source naming seven animals to keep away from it. The longest animal with nothing against it at all is the kuhli loach at 3.5 to 3.9 inches. Size predicts one thing well and it is not aggression: whether something is small enough to be eaten.
How many species can go in one tank?
Our answer is one group per layer, which gives four in a tank large enough, and it is our rule rather than a recorded figure. It comes out of the group sizes the records state: eight to ten ember tetras and six corydoras is already fourteen fish before you add anything.
Does a bigger tank fix an incompatible pairing?
It fixes a volume problem and does nothing for a water problem. If two ranges do not overlap, no volume makes one temperature suit both. If the ranges overlap and the group sizes do not fit, volume is exactly the fix.
Where does this site get its compatibility information?
The bands are computed from the temperature ranges on our own records, each of which names the source it came from field by field. The refusals are quoted from a source and cited on the record. Nothing on this page is a pairing we tried in a tank.
Why so few species?
Because forty eight are verified and the rest are not written yet. A record here takes every source we can find on one animal, compares them field by field, and prints the disagreements. That is slow, and the alternative is the kind of page this grid exists to replace.
What is not here yet
One guide is filed under this topic. The pairings people actually search for run to well over a hundred species, and the five asked for most often are the angelfish, the pea puffer, the tiger barb, the goldfish and the gourami. Four of those five now have a record here and appear in the grid above: the angelfish, the pea puffer, the goldfish and the honey gourami. The tiger barb does not. A record is the entry price rather than the page itself, because a pairing guide needs both records and a source that names the pairing, which is why the grid holds four of them and the guide list still holds one.
The order is records first, pairings second. When a species has a record with a temperature range on it, it appears in the grid on this page the same day, without anybody writing a sentence about it.
Temperament, the field we store and never print
Every record on this site carries a temperament, taken from its sources like every other field. None of them appears on a record page, because the record table prints nine fields and temperament is not one of the nine. So this site holds twenty seven temperaments and shows you none of them, which on a tank mates topic is the axis missing from every grid above. The other three records are plants.
Here they are, grouped by the words the records store them in.
- Peaceful, shoaling for the corydoras catfish, the ember tetra and the kuhli loach.
- Peaceful, grazing for the cherry shrimp and the nerite snail, and peaceful, and it multiplies for the ramshorn snail, against peaceful, and a predator of anything with a shell for the assassin snail, which is the pair of temperaments that explains the refusal between them.
- Very peaceful for the guppy, which is the only record given the intensifier, and peaceful, gregarious for the goldfish, which is the only one given a second adjective.
- Peaceful with a clause attached on ten records, and the clause is the useful half: shoaling, easily out-competed for the otocinclus, slow, and easily out-competed for the honey gourami, and everything small enough is food for the clown loach, and our sources split on its own kind for the siamese algae eater, and our sources split on shy or bold for the chili rasbora, and the males pester the females for the platy, and a predator of anything small enough for the clown killifish, and territorial with its own kind for the bristlenose pleco, except with its own kind and with anything smaller for the angelfish, and clumsy, and short sighted for the african dwarf frog.
- Peaceful, and something that happens to it on two records: an expert escaper for the amano shrimp and sold as food for the ghost shrimp.
- Not peaceful, in six different ways: territorial for the betta, one word and the shortest here; predatory for its size, and a fin nipper for the pea puffer; not overly aggressive, and everything smaller is food for the oscar; calm, and aggressive with each other when pairing for the discus; docile, and a clumsy eater for the axolotl, which is not a fish; and the most aggressively territorial fish our sources name for the flowerhorn, which is the only temperament here that quotes a source rather than summarising one.
Twenty one of the twenty seven carry the word peaceful and six do not. That is not a coincidence and it is not a curated list: it is what a site that writes small freshwater aquarium records ends up holding. The six that do not are named in sixteen of the twenty seven refusals in the grid above, and the exception is the goldfish, which is stored as peaceful, gregarious and still carries six of them, every one for a reason other than temper.
A source that disagrees with how this grid is built
Aqueon names twelve things that determine whether fish can live together: aquarium size, aquarium dimensions, decorations and plants, species and origin, age, size, gender, quantity, territory and dominance hierarchies, predatory behavior, breeding status, and individual personalities.
Water chemistry is not on that list, and neither is diet. The grid above is built almost entirely on shared water, because that is what our records hold as numbers. So a reader should know that a major compatibility source would not build it this way, and that the axis we can measure is not the axis it thinks matters most.
Where a group warning meets a species record
Aqueon states that cichlids, certain species of sharks, loaches, knife fish, mormyrids and other territorial fish do not share space well with their own kind or closely related species. We hold one loach, and our record for it stores peaceful, shoaling, from a source describing that species.
A group warning and a species record, and the species record is the narrower measurement. That is the same shape as the snails topic, where a guide warns about loaches with snails and Aquarium Co-Op says of this loach specifically that it is not known for eating them.
The school as a temperament fix
Aqueon adds something no record here states: boisterous fish like tiger barbs and even certain species of tetras and danios are often better behaved when in large schools. Our ember tetra record already argues that the school is the unit you buy rather than the fish, from the welfare side. This is the same figure arriving from the temperament side, which is the first time a source has connected the two.
