A fern that grows two ways, and a care sheet with the wrong name in the box
Water sprite is a fern, not a stem plant, and every source we hold will grow it either rooted in the substrate or floating on the surface. It is the first plant record here whose placement row has two answers that are both right, and the first where a source prints another plant’s scientific name in its own stats box.
Wikipedia puts Ceratopteris thalictroides in one of only two genera of the subfamily Parkerioideae of the family Pteridaceae, and gives the common names water sprite, Indian fern, water fern, oriental waterfern and water hornfern. Aquarium Breeder adds fine leaf Indian fern, water stag-horn fern and mizuwarabi.
The wild plant is bigger than a tank suggests. Wikipedia gives fertile fronds of 15 to 100 centimeters, 5.9 to 39.4 inches, or more, growing near stagnant water or in still pockets along slow flowing rivers in swampy areas, as far north as Korea and as far south as western Australia. No aquarium source we hold publishes a size at all.
It is also food. Wikipedia: the fronds are cooked and eaten as a vegetable in Madagascar and Swaziland, used similarly to watercress, and the plant can be used as green manure for rice. That is not decoration on this record, it is the clearest thing anybody publishes about how fast the plant grows.

72 to 77, and where that lands on this site
Four bands are published and they meet in five degrees of eleven. The row prints 72 to 77 °F, and the ceiling is the interesting end: 77 is exactly where our platy record stops, so those two records are now the pair holding the top of the band the rest of this site shares. Our water and health topic recomputes that band every time a record lands.
It also breaks a pattern the plant records had. Our java moss and hornwort records run 59 to 86 °F and contain every animal band here; this one does not contain any of the warm records at all. A plant can be the reason a tank cannot run warm, which is a sentence this site could not write until now.
Light, and the consequence of going under it
Modest Fish gives PAR 50 to 80, medium to high. Aquarium Store Depot gives 30 to 80 PAR with a stated minimum of 20 to 40, and is the only source to publish what happens below it: low-light conditions cause yellowing and melting within weeks. The row prints the 50 to 80 both sources allow.
One instruction follows from the placement row rather than from the plant: rooted plants will need stronger light than floated plants. A floating fern sits directly under the tube, and the same fern rooted is a foot further away.
pH, and why the overlap is half a point
Modest Fish 6.0 to 7.5, Aquarium Breeder 6.0 to 8.0 with a tolerance of 5.5 to 8, aqua-fish 5.0 to 6.5. Those three share 6.0 to 6.5, which is what the row prints and the narrowest pH row on any plant record here.
Aquarium Store Depot publishes no range at all and explains why the overlap is so tight: the plant grows best in slightly acidic to neutral water and will grow well in pretty much any pH value. One source is describing a preference and the others a tolerance, and not one of the five reports the plant failing at a pH.
Hardness, which this schema does not carry
Three sources publish it and they publish two units: GH 3 to 19 and KH 3 to 8 from Modest Fish, GH 2 to 15 and KH 3 to 8 from Aquarium Breeder, GH 4 to 8 from aqua-fish. The three GH ranges meet at 4 to 8 dGH.
The plant schema on this site has no hardness field, for the reason our java fern record sets out: plant sources publish carbonate hardness where animal sources publish general hardness, and the two do not average. The figures are here in the prose instead.
CO2, and the first source to argue against it
Every source calls it optional. Modest Fish goes further: with all plants, added CO2 will improve growth, but you might not want that with water sprite as it grows so fast already. Four plant records here say CO2 is not needed; this is the first source to make it a reason not to.

Both, and one source prefers the float

Aquarium Store Depot lists midground, background and floating, and says the plant performs just as well as a floating plant, and many experienced aquarists actually prefer it that way. Aquarium Breeder describes the difference: floated, it grows taller and develops wider and flatter leaves. Wikipedia calls it prized for its versatility.
Against our other four plant records that is unusual. Our hornwort record floats, our java fern and anubias records are tied or glued to hardscape with the rhizome above the substrate, and our java moss record attaches to whatever it is tied to. This is the first plant here where the placement row is a choice rather than an instruction.
The substrate, when there is one
Nothing special: sand or gravel on three sources, at least 2 inches of it when rooted, and only the roots buried with the crown left exposed. Aquarium Breeder is the only source with a reason, that the roots are tender, and it asks for soil, coarse sand or fine gravel.
Scissors, weekly
Aquarium Store Depot: trim weekly or it takes over the surface, and grow it in tanks of at least 10 gallons, because water sprite can quickly take over your aquascape in anything smaller. That 10 gallons is the only volume any source publishes for this plant, and it is about growth rather than about size.
Two sources agree on how to cut it. Modest Fish: trim the outer stems, not the main stem originating directly from the roots, and remove the cut branches from the tank or else they will start to grow roots. Aquarium Breeder: trim stems regularly, and do not trim the main stem.
The cuttings are the propagation method as well as the mess, which is station 05, and it is the reason the growth rate row on this record disagrees with itself.
Cover for fry, on three sources
Modest Fish: these leaves make for a perfect habitat for newborn fry and small fish. Aquarium Store Depot: the floating root system provides exactly the cover betta fry and corydoras eggs need. Aquarium Breeder: ideal as a hiding spot and shade for small fish, fry and shrimp.
That is the same job our java moss record does at the bottom of the tank. On our guppy record it answers a problem the fish creates every month, and on our betta record the same instruction appears for the same reason.

Growth and propagation, and a source that publishes both answers
Fast, or low to moderate
Aquarium Store Depot says fast. Aquarium Breeder says fast. aqua-fish says moderate to fast when provided with strong lighting. Modest Fish publishes low to moderate in its stats box, and in its own text says you might not want CO2 with water sprite as it grows so fast already.
Those two statements are on one page, so this record prints the figure three sources support and names the disagreement instead of averaging it. That is what our dojo loach record does with two sources that contradict themselves, and the rule is on our method page: a source that disagrees with itself does not set an end of a row on its own.
The figure a keeper can act on is not a rate anyway. It is Aquarium Store Depot’s instruction: trim weekly or it takes over the surface.

Wikipedia describes the wild mechanism the tank cannot use: shedding spores during the dry season and repopulating from spores the next season. A tank has no dry season, which is why every aquarium source describes plantlets instead.
So the answer to how to propagate water sprite is that you do not have to. The plantlets form, root and detach on their own, and the only real decision is where they go, or whether they come out of the tank at all.

Our goldfish record already refuses two plants for the same reason, our hornwort and java fern records, on Wikipedia’s statement that because goldfish eat live plants, their presence in a planted aquarium is a problem. This is the third, and the one with the most sources behind it.
Our anubias record is the exception that makes the pattern worth reading: there two sources say a goldfish will leave the plant alone, so that cell is a caution rather than a refusal. Four plant records, four different goldfish answers.
The gourami warning, and what we do with one source
Aquarium Breeder is the only source of the five to name gouramis, and it names the group rather than a species. Our honey gourami record carries a diet of omnivore, and an insect eater in the wild, and no source on that record calls it a plant eater.
So the grid carries that pairing as one setting only rather than as a refusal, with the reason printed under it, and the water narrows it further: 74 to 77 °F is all the two records share. One source against a group is a caution here, and three sources against a species is a refusal, which is the whole difference between this paragraph and the one above it.
Cichlids, and what we cannot check
Two sources name cichlids, one of them adding herbivorous. We hold six cichlid records, and none of them shares this plant’s band: the angelfish starts at 78, the flowerhorn at 80, the german blue ram at 84 and the discus at 85, all above where this row stops. The arithmetic refuses them before the diet is reached, which is why this record carries no cichlid refusal of its own.

What the box says
Aquarium Breeder’s quick notes box prints the scientific name of water sprite as Hygrophila difformis, with Ruellia difformis and Synnema triflorum in brackets. Those three names belong to water wisteria, a flowering plant in the family Acanthaceae, and not to a fern.
The rest of that page uses Ceratopteris thalictroides, including its own taxonomy section, which notes that species recognition has been confused due to their high polymorphism. So this is a stats box rather than an argument, and we carry the name the page’s own text carries.
It is worth printing because of what people are searching for. Water sprite versus wisteria is a real keyword, and the confusion it expresses is not only a shopper’s: it is in a published care sheet, in the field a reader would trust most.
What the two plants actually differ in
Aquarium Store Depot compares them directly, and it is the only source we hold that does: water wisteria is slightly more demanding on light and nutrients and does not float well, while water sprite is more versatile: it performs equally as a rooted plant or a floater.

They are two different plants and one of our own sources mixes them up. Water sprite is a fern, Ceratopteris thalictroides, in the family Pteridaceae. Water wisteria is Hygrophila difformis, a flowering plant. Aquarium Breeder prints Hygrophila difformis, with Ruellia difformis and Synnema triflorum in brackets, as the scientific name in its own quick notes box for water sprite, while its own text and taxonomy section use Ceratopteris thalictroides throughout. Aquarium Store Depot compares them properly, saying water wisteria is slightly more demanding on light and nutrients and does not float well, while water sprite is more versatile because it performs equally as a rooted plant or a floater.
