The amano shrimp cannot breed in your tank. Its larvae have to reach the sea

Most care records answer whether an animal will breed for you. This one answers it in a way no other record here can, because the reason is in the animal's life cycle rather than in your husbandry. Wikipedia gives the mechanism: the species is amphidromous, so oviposition and hatching occurs in freshwater, and newly hatched larvae drift to saltwater and develop as juveniles, returning to freshwater in their adult forms.

Aquarium Co-Op states the consequence: they are not capable of reproducing in regular freshwater tanks at all, since their larvae require highly brackish or salt water to survive. Aquatic Arts agrees and adds that they are extremely difficult to breed in aquariums and will not breed at all in freshwater.

So every amano shrimp in the hobby began in the sea. That is a fact about supply as much as about biology, and it is the sharpest difference between this record and the two other shrimp records on this site: our cherry shrimp record carries one male and one female for a colony, because that animal will fill a tank on its own.

The other thing worth knowing before the figures is the name. Caridina multidentata was known to aquarists as Caridina japonica until a 2006 study renamed it, and it entered the hobby through Takashi Amano in the early 1980s. It is the only animal on this site named after the person who introduced it.

Why this record was written now

The gap
At 22,000 searches a month it is tied with the brine shrimp for the largest term left in the map, and the shrimp silo had two records against a four name queue.
What it changes
The silo now holds one animal from each of three genera, which is the split its own opening paragraph is about. It is also the first record here that needed no new sources: all six were already in use elsewhere on this site.
What it does not
One field stays blank. No source states a growth rate, and two publish figures that are regularly mistaken for one.

The best algae eater in the hobby, with two qualifications

Every source on this record is here because of algae, and the two most useful sentences on the whole page are the ones that limit the claim. Read them before you buy the animal to solve a problem.

  • What they do eat. Aquarium Co-Op: they will go after hair algae, thread algae and even black beard algae. Flip Aquatics adds green algae to the same list and calls black beard algae the dreaded one.
  • The first qualification: not flat surfaces. Aquarium Co-Op states they are not as good at eating flat types of algae that grow on surfaces. Flip Aquatics says the same thing by comparison: less effective at scraping algae off flat surfaces than snails. So the green film on your glass is not this animal's job.
  • The second qualification: they would rather eat something else. Aquarium Co-Op states they prefer not to eat algae if other tastier options are available, and that you should limit feedings for a few days if you want them to work on your algae problem. An amano shrimp in a well fed tank is not an algae eater.
  • And one source refuses the premise. Aquarium Care Basics: it is a misconception that they will eat away algae problems in a tank. It is the only source here to say so and it is the source whose water figures the record carries.
  • What to feed instead. Aquatic Arts and Aquarium Care Basics give almost the same list: shrimp pellets, fish flakes, algae wafers, bloodworms and blanched vegetables, with raw green zucchini and spinach named twice.

Put together, the sources describe an animal that is excellent at the algae a snail cannot reach and poor at the algae a snail is for, and that will do neither if there is fish food on the floor. Our nerite snail record is the other half of that: a grazer for flat surfaces, which is exactly the gap Aquarium Co-Op and Flip Aquatics both name here.

This is also the reason the record's diet row reads the way it does. Algae is what the animal eats and not what it prefers, and a field that said algae alone would be repeating a reputation rather than a source.

Four bands, and the narrowest one is the answer

The sources on this record do not contradict each other. They nest, and the tightest band belongs to the source with the fewest figures. Take the highest floor and the lowest ceiling of the four temperature ranges and you get exactly the fourth source's published band. Do it again with pH and the same thing happens.

  • Three sources describe a tolerance and one describes a preference. That is the whole finding. A reader who takes 60 to 80 °F as a target has read the widest tolerance on the record as an instruction, and the animal is comfortable in six degrees of it.
  • The hardness row has one GH figure and two KH figures. Aquatic Arts publishes gH 4 to 14, which this record carries as 72 to 251 ppm, plus KH 0 to 10 and TDS 80 to 400. Shrimpy Business publishes the same KH band and no GH. Aquarium Co-Op and Aquarium Care Basics give a direction rather than a number, moderate to hard and on the hard side, and both agree with the GH figure.
  • Compare it with the other shrimp we hold. Our cherry shrimp record carries 71 to 179 ppm and calls hardness the field that animal molts on, and our ghost shrimp record leaves the row blank because no source published a GH figure at all. Three shrimp records, three different states of the same field.
  • The tank figure is the thinnest thing here. One source publishes a volume, 10 gallons with a maximum of two shrimp per gallon. Another says a nano tank or larger will do if the lid fits. Three say nothing. This record carries the 10.

Aquarium Co-Op gives 6 to 8, Aquatic Arts 6.0 to 7.6, Shrimpy Business 6.5 to 7.5, and Wikipedia says they prefer 6.5 to 7.5. Every band contains 7.2 to 7.5 and no other band is contained by all the rest.

Aquatic Arts, as gH 4 to 14, converted here at about 17.9 ppm per degree. It is the only general hardness figure any source publishes for this animal. Aquarium Co-Op says moderate to hard GH without a number and Aquarium Care Basics says on the hard side, which agree with it in direction.

Two sources publish a carbonate hardness figure identically, KH 0 to 10, and Aquatic Arts adds TDS 80 to 400. The GH figure is the one this row carries.

Adult size1 to 2 in

Five sources and five answers, and the spread runs three to one. Wikipedia is the smallest and the most precise: they typically grow to 25 to 35 mm, 0.98 to 1.38 inches. Aquarium Co-Op gives 1.5 to 2 inches.

Aquatic Arts gives a maximum of 2 inches or more, and adds that it ships young adults of half an inch to an inch. Aquarium Care Basics says upwards of two inches and that shop shrimp are about an inch or a little less.

Flip Aquatics is the outlier at over 3 inches. This record carries the band that contains the scientific figure and the two care figures nearest it. It is no longer the largest shrimp here.

Our vampire shrimp record publishes 2 to 4.5 inches in a tank and up to 6 in the wild, which at the top of its captive range is three times this animal.

DietAlgae, and it prefers not to be

Wikipedia says they feed primarily on algae, and every source on this record is here for that reason. Two of them qualify it and the qualifications matter more than the reputation. Aquarium Care Basics alone. Aquarium Co-Op, Aquatic Arts, Shrimpy Business, Flip Aquatics and Wikipedia state no lifespan for this animal. It is longer than two of the three other shrimp records here: our cherry shrimp carries 1 to 2 years and our ghost shrimp carries days to 1.5 years.

The exception is the newest one. Our vampire shrimp record carries 3 to 5 years, with one source claiming up to ten, which gives it the highest lifespan floor of any invertebrate on this site.

Blank. No source states how fast an amano shrimp grows or when it is adult. Two publish figures that are often mistaken for it: Aquarium Care Basics gives a molt every five or six weeks, give or take, and Shrimpy Business gives six weeks for a female to carry eggs.

Neither is a growth rate. Aquatic Arts gives the only figure adjacent to one, and it is a shipping figure: it ships young adults of half an inch to an inch.

Every record here names a disagreement. On this one the sources do not contradict each other so much as nest inside each other, and the tightest band belongs to the source with the fewest figures.

Aquarium Care Basics

72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. pH between 7.2 and 7.5. Water that is on the hard side, well circulated. A full grown amano shrimp size can be upwards of two inches. An amano shrimp lifespan is between two and three years. Molting occurs once every five or six weeks, give or take.

The three wider sources

Aquarium Co-Op: 65 to 82 °F, pH 6 to 8, moderate to hard GH. Shrimpy Business: 64 to 84 °F, pH 6.5 to 7.5, KH 0 to 10. Aquatic Arts: 60 to 80 °F, pH 6.0 to 7.6, gH 4 to 14, KH 0 to 10, TDS 80 to 400.

What we record: we carry the narrow band, because it is not a fourth opinion, it is the part all four agree on. Take the highest floor and the lowest ceiling of the four temperature ranges and you get 72 to 78, which is Aquarium Care Basics exactly; do the same with the pH ranges and you get 7.2 to 7.5, which is Aquarium Care Basics again.

That is worth noticing rather than smoothing over: three sources describe what the animal tolerates and one describes where it is comfortable, and a reader who takes the widest band as the target has read a tolerance as a preference.

Amano shrimp size: five sources, five answers

This is the second most searched question about the animal and it has the widest spread of any size figure on this site. The smallest published answer and the largest differ by more than three times, and the smallest is the scientific one.

  • The two figures at the bottom of the table are the useful ones. Both sources that sell or handle the animal say the same thing: the shrimp you buy is about an inch or less. Whatever the adult figure is, that is not what arrives.
  • The scientific figure is the smallest. Wikipedia's 25 to 35 mm is a typical size for the species rather than a maximum, and it sits below every care source. That is the opposite of the pattern on our oscar record, where the reference sources gave the largest figures.
  • Over 3 inches is the outlier and it is printed rather than dropped. One source of five gives it, and no other source comes within an inch. This record carries 1 to 2 inches, which is the band containing the scientific figure and the two care figures nearest it.
  • Size is why the tank mate list is short. A 1 to 2 inch invertebrate is food for most of what this site holds, which is station 09.

A planted tank, and the reason it is not a dwarf shrimp

What our sources ask of the tank

Shrimpy Business is the only source here to describe the tank rather than the water, and it describes a planted one: a planted tank offers places to hide and relax, and keeping their natural habitat in mind you can find a variety of aquarium plants, accessories and other essentials to make them feel more at home.

It is also the source that explains its own stocking figure, and the explanation is the most useful sentence on this page after the breeding one. Amano shrimp are generally sold in packs of five, so it suggests a 10 gallon tank, with a maximum of 2 shrimp per gallon because they can get pretty large compared to their dwarf shrimp cousins.

Aquarium Co-Op asks for less and for something different: most nano tanks or larger will do, as long as the lid fits. Neither source names a plant species, and none of the other four says anything about plants at all.

Not a dwarf shrimp, which is why the rule changes

This is the distinction that separates the three shrimp on this site, and it is not the genus. Our cherry shrimp record states that its own five gallon figure arrives through a general rule for freshwater dwarf shrimp rather than by anybody measuring that animal. The amano is not a dwarf shrimp, so the rule does not reach it, and Shrimpy Business puts a number on the difference instead: two per gallon rather than the three to four our ghost shrimp record carries.

That is one source doing the arithmetic our cherry shrimp record says nobody did for the animal it is about. It is worth reading the two records together for that reason alone.

On plants there is a gap worth naming. Three records here have sources that name a plant by species, and this one does not, on an animal named after the person who introduced it to the hobby. Our plants silo holds a record now, for hornwort, and no source we read names any plant for this animal, so there is nothing here to confirm.

Why there are no baby amano shrimp in a freshwater tank

What amphidromous means here

Wikipedia's sentence is the whole answer and it is worth reading slowly: oviposition and hatching occurs in freshwater, and newly hatched larvae drift to saltwater and develop as juveniles, returning to freshwater in their adult forms.

So the eggs are laid and hatch in your tank. It is the next stage that cannot happen. Aquarium Co-Op puts it plainly: they are not capable of reproducing in regular freshwater tanks at all, since their larvae require highly brackish or salt water to survive. Aquatic Arts says the same twice over, calling them extremely difficult to breed in aquariums, stating they will not breed at all in freshwater, and naming brackish water as required.

Shrimpy Business adds the one duration anybody publishes: the female carries them for six weeks. A keeper who sees a berried female and waits for a colony is watching a process that ends where the tank ends.

What that means for the hobby

Every amano shrimp in a shop tank came from a supply chain that includes the sea. That is not a criticism of the animal or the trade, it is the reason this record cannot carry a colony figure the way our cherry shrimp record can, and the reason a keeper who wants shrimp that multiply should read that record instead.

It is also the sharpest contrast the shrimp silo holds. Three records, three genera: Neocaridina, which will fill a tank on its own; Caridina, which cannot; and Palaemonetes, which our ghost shrimp record describes as being sold for food and whose own sources cannot agree how many eggs it lays.

Copper, and for the first time on this site, why

Two records here already warn about copper and neither says what it does. Wikipedia's sentence on this one supplies the mechanism: as with all crustaceans, they are extremely averse to copper due to their hemocyanin blood.

  • Wikipedia. The reason. Hemocyanin is a copper based oxygen carrier, which is why a metal that is a trace nutrient for us is a poison for them.
  • Aquatic Arts. The practical version, and the widest list of where it hides: avoid any food product, medication or plant fertilizer that contains copper of any form. Copper is toxic to invertebrates.
  • Aquarium Care Basics. Avoid copper, alongside ammonia spikes and high nitrate levels.
  • Where this sits on the site. Our nerite snail record carries the warning from Aquatic Arts, and our ghost shrimp record carries it from three sources including the names of two medications. Three records here now warn about copper, this one and those two, and all three are invertebrates.
  • And the gap that is still open. Our cherry shrimp record does not mention copper at all, because none of its three sources raised it. Wikipedia's sentence here is about all crustaceans rather than this species, which makes that omission harder to leave alone, and it is named here rather than quietly patched there.

The other husbandry note on this record is not about water at all, and only one source raises it. Aquarium Co-Op states that amano shrimp are expert escapers, that they can live in most nano tanks or larger as long as there is a tight fitting lid, and that you should cover any openings where power cords or airline tubing come out of the tank. It is the only place on this site where a source calls an animal an expert escaper, though it is not the only lid on the site: our betta record asks for one because bettas jump, and our ember tetra record says its sources state no jumping risk for that species, which it treats as a different answer from no.

Molting is the third thing worth carrying. Aquarium Care Basics gives the interval, once every five or six weeks give or take, and Aquarium Co-Op gives the instruction: if the empty exoskeleton is clear rather than solid colored, leave it in the tank so the shrimp can consume it for extra minerals.

Amano shrimp tank mates, and one sentence that refuses three of our records

Aquarium Co-Op names both sides of the list, and its warning is specific enough to run against this site directly rather than by inference. Stay away from any fish that are big enough to eat them, like medium to large cichlids, barbs, and goldfish.

  • One sentence refuses three records at once. Medium to large cichlids, barbs and goldfish. We hold the goldfish, the angelfish and the oscar, and all three are refused by a warning that never mentions them individually except the goldfish.
  • The Endler's distinction is worth keeping. Aquarium Co-Op names Endler's livebearers, not guppies, and they are not the same fish. Our record is for the guppy, so the row says probably rather than yes.
  • The open question is competition, not danger. The otocinclus is an algae grazer whose own record says it is easily out-competed for food. Nothing we have read addresses two algae grazers in one tank, and the tank mates grid marks it unanswered rather than guessing.

  • The amano wants the narrowest water and lives the longest. A pH band of three tenths of a point against the cherry shrimp's one and a half, and two to three years against one to two.
  • Only one of the three will multiply for you. That is the difference most likely to decide which animal a reader should buy, and it is not a difference any of the water rows would reveal.
  • The genus is not decoration. Caridina and Neocaridina can cross where they are closely related enough, which the silo covers; Palaemonetes is a third family and cannot cross with either. Our sources name all three as suitable together.
  • They are sold for three different reasons. An algae eater, a colony animal and a feeder. The care figures are the smaller part of what separates them.

Aquarium Care Basics goes furthest, calling it a misconception that they will eat away algae problems in a tank.

What size tank do amano shrimp need?

10 gallons, from Shrimpy Business, with a maximum of 2 shrimp per gallon. It is the only volume any of our six sources publishes.

Aquarium Co-Op answers the question a different way and gives no floor: they can live in most nano tanks or larger, as long as there is a tight fitting lid. That lid is not optional in its telling, because the same source calls them expert escapers and says to cover any openings where power cords or airline tubing come out of the tank.

Can amano shrimp live with a betta?

Not on this site's reading. No source on this record names the betta either way, and our betta tank mates guide refuses shrimp on Aquarium Co-Op describing bettas as notorious for going after them.

At 1 to 2 inches the amano is the largest of the three shrimp we hold, which is the one argument in its favor, and it is not an argument any source makes. The verdict stays no and the reason is printed rather than implied.

What can live with amano shrimp?

More of this site's records than for any other animal here. Aquarium Co-Op names tetras, Endler's livebearers, corydoras catfish, bristlenose plecos, kuhli loaches, other shrimp and snails as suitable, and seven of our records fall inside that list.

The refusal is a single sentence and it is specific: stay away from any fish that are big enough to eat them, like medium to large cichlids, barbs, and goldfish. That refuses our goldfish, angelfish and oscar records at once. Station 09 runs the whole list.

How can you tell male from female amano shrimp?

Aquarium Co-Op is the only source of the six to say: males are smaller and have dots along the side of the body, while females are larger and have a row of dashes instead of dots.

That is also why this record publishes no color varieties. The dots and dashes are the marks people photograph and ask about, and in the one source that explains them they are a sex difference rather than a variety.

Why is copper dangerous to amano shrimp?

Because their blood uses it. Wikipedia gives the mechanism, which no other record on this site carries: as with all crustaceans, they are extremely averse to copper due to their hemocyanin blood. Hemocyanin is a copper based oxygen carrier, so a metal that is a trace nutrient for a vertebrate is a poison for them.

Aquatic Arts gives the practical list of where it hides: avoid any food product, medication or plant fertilizer that contains copper of any form. Our nerite snail and ghost shrimp records carry the same warning without the reason.

How often do amano shrimp molt?

Once every five or six weeks, give or take, from Aquarium Care Basics. Aquarium Co-Op gives the instruction rather than the interval: if you see an empty exoskeleton that is clear rather than solid colored, leave the molt in the tank so the shrimp can consume it for extra minerals.

A solid colored shell is a dead shrimp rather than a molt, which is the distinction that sentence is drawing. Our cherry shrimp record is where molting has a water figure attached, because for that animal the minerals in the water are the shell.

Amano shrimp or cherry shrimp?

They are sold for different reasons and station 10 puts every field side by side. The short version: the amano is the better algae eater, lives longer at 2 to 3 years, wants a narrower pH band at 7.2 to 7.5, and will never breed in your tank. The cherry shrimp is easier on water, breeds readily as a colony from one male and one female, and is smaller.

Our sources name them as suitable tank mates for each other, and they are different genera so there is no crossbreeding question between them. The shrimp silo covers the crossbreeding that does matter, which is between Caridina and Neocaridina.

Where does this record disagree with the rest of the site?

In three ways. It is the first record here where the narrowest source band turned out to be the intersection of every other band, twice over. It is the first record whose breeding answer is never, with a mechanism rather than a difficulty rating. And it is the first record that needed no new sources: all six were already in use elsewhere on this site.

Size is what saves this shrimp from one of our newer records. Our african dwarf frog record carries a source stating that the frog will eat all your dwarf shrimp inevitably, and that amano and ghost shrimp can grow up to two inches, so they do have a chance to survive. Two inches is also the size of the frog.

The sentence on this record turned out to be the argument of a guide. Aquarium Co-Op saying that these shrimp prefer not to eat algae if other tastier options are available, and that feedings should be limited for a few days to get them working on an algae problem, is the finding our what do shrimp eat guide is built around. Four records, one sentence: an algae eater fed properly eats less algae.

This record no longer caps the site. Since it was written, the ceiling on the band every record here shares has been 78 °F, set by this one alone. Our platy record now stops at 77, because two of its three sources will not take that fish above 77 or 78, so the shared band across the site is 75 to 77 °F and this record sits one degree above the new cap. Nothing about this animal changed, which is the point of recomputing a band from the records rather than editing the sentence: a figure that was true for six records in a row stopped being true when a cooler fish arrived.
