An inch and a half of Orinoco cichlid, and four names it has been given

A german blue ram is a dwarf cichlid from the savannahs of Venezuela and Colombia, kept warmer than almost anything else on this site. Its five published temperature ranges have no value in common, and the two most technical sources publish half the adult size the care sheets do.

Wikipedia and Seriously Fish agree on the current name, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, and on three older ones: Apistogramma ramirezi, Papiliochromis ramirezi and Microgeophagus ramirezi, the last of which differs from the accepted spelling by a single letter. Wikipedia gives the species as endemic to the Orinoco River basin.

The german in the name is a trade prefix, not a place. The same fish is sold as a blue ram, a ram cichlid and a ramirezi, and station 07 has what our sources say about the electric blue, gold and balloon lines sold beside it.

On size the sources split by measurement rather than by opinion. Seriously Fish gives a maximum standard length of 40 mm and Wikipedia 34 to 40 mm, both measured to the base of the tail. Aquarium Co-Op gives 2 to 2.5 inches, Aquarium Source 2 to 3, and Fish Laboratory around 2. The row carries both ends, because a 1.6 inch figure and a 3 inch figure for one fish are two rulers rather than two animals.

The empty overlap

Read the temperature column down and there is no number in all five. Aquarium Co-Op wants 84 to 86 °F ideally; Aquarium Source publishes 72 to 79. Those two share nothing, and a reader who takes the first figure they find is setting a heater seven degrees away from the figure on the next page they open.

Four of the five do meet, in two degrees: 84 to 85 °F, which is what this record prints. The fifth is printed above and carried nowhere, and the reason is not a majority vote. The publisher giving the warmest figure ties it to health rather than to comfort, saying that at 84 to 86 the fish settle in better, are less susceptible to diseases and lose fewer fry when breeding, and Wikipedia measured the wild water at 77.9 to 85.1 °F. A 72 degree floor is below the wild range as well as below three of the four aquarium sources.

Seriously Fish gives 4.0 to 7.0, Aquarium Source 5 to 7.5, Fish Laboratory 6.0 to 7.5, and Aquarium Co-Op no figure at all, asking only for soft water. Those three meet at 6.0 to 7.0. Wikipedia measures the habitat instead and puts it lower: acidic, pH 5.2 to 6.7, few dissolved minerals, from clear to darkly stained with tannins.

So the aquarium figures sit above the wild ones, the same pattern our chili rasbora and discus records carry. The low end of the row is worth knowing rather than aiming at.

Hardness, from one source out of six

Only Seriously Fish publishes general hardness, 1 to 10 dGH, which the row prints as 18 to 179 ppm. Aquarium Source publishes 5 to 12 KH, carbonate hardness, which is a different measurement of a different property, and the other four agree on the direction without giving a number. It is the second lowest hardness ceiling here, above only the discus.

Twenty gallons, and a footprint

Aquarium Co-Op and Aquarium Source both publish 20 gallons; Fish Laboratory says a 10 gallon tank is a perfect size, and Aquarium Co-Op reserves 10 gallons for a breeding tank rather than a home. Seriously Fish gives no volume at all and asks for a 60 by 30 cm base, 24 by 12 inches, for a single pair.

The footprint source is the one that explains the volume: this is a bottom fish that feeds by sifting substrate, so floor area is what it uses. That is the same argument our bristlenose pleco record makes and the opposite of the one our angelfish record makes, where the fish is measured the wrong way round and the height is what costs the gallons.

A pair, because the fish chooses a pair

Wikipedia: they form monogamous pairs prior to spawning, with biparental brood care. Seriously Fish calls the genus exclusively monogamous and says the species should be kept in a pair. Aquarium Co-Op asks for 40 gallons for two pairs and Aquarium Source limits it to two per tank, asking for at least 40 gallons if both are males.

That makes this the first record here whose group figure is two for a reason other than aggression or volume. Our betta record says one male, never two, and our guppy record says one male to two or three females. This one says two, and the source reason is the pair bond.

Plants, for a fish that moves the substrate

Aquarium Co-Op is the only source that names any, and it names them for the reason this record’s water column row implies: plants like java fern and mosses that do not need substrate. A fish that feeds by taking mouthfuls of the bottom is a fish that will move anything rooted in it.

Both of those are records here. Our java fern and java moss records carry the same instruction from their own sources, that neither is planted in the substrate at all, and their water parameters allow it: java fern runs 72 to 82 °F against this row at 84 to 85, so the plant record stops one degree below the fish. Java moss runs 59 to 86 and contains it.

That is the same arithmetic our dojo loach record ran from the other end of the thermometer, and it lands on the same two plants for the same reason.

The sentence that decides the tank

Seriously Fish: not recommended for the general community aquarium since it requires pristine water quality and is a poor competitor. It recommends peaceful open-water characids as company and says to avoid territorial or otherwise aggressive fishes, including most other cichlids.

Read that against the food lists in station 05 and the two say the same thing twice. A fish that sifts the bottom and cannot outfeed a fast eater needs sinking food and a tank where something else is not eating it first. The risk on this record is not what the ram does to its tank mates.

What the sources will not settle

The lifespan figures overlap in a single year: 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and up to 4, which has no floor. The row prints the full span the three cover rather than the one year they share, because a ceiling without a floor cannot set the bottom of a row. Seriously Fish gives no figure and gives the reason instead, which is station 07.

And no source publishes a growth rate. The closest is Aquarium Source, which says they are sexually mature at a very young age and ready to breed after about six months, and that is a maturity age rather than a rate. The field stays blank, which our records index prints as a blank.

The two most technical sources publish half what the care sheets do, and the difference is the tail. Seriously Fish gives a maximum standard length of 40 mm, 1.6 inches, and Wikipedia gives 34 to 40 mm, 1.3 to 1.6 in, with males slightly larger than females.

Standard length is measured to the base of the tail rather than to its tip. Against that, Aquarium Co-Op gives 2 to 2.5 inches, Aquarium Source 2 to 3 inches and Fish Laboratory around 2 inches, all of which are almost certainly total length.

The row prints both ends rather than choosing, because a reader comparing a 1.6 inch figure with a 3 inch figure is comparing two different measurements of the same fish, and no source we hold says which it used.

DietOmnivore, and a substrate sifter

Seriously Fish describes benthic sifters in the wild and asks for live and frozen fare such as bloodworm, Artemia, Daphnia and grindal worm, supplemented by good quality sinking dried foods. Aquarium Co-Op names sinking pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex worms, and frozen brine shrimp, cyclops, bloodworms and mysis shrimp.

Aquarium Source calls them omnivores and names high quality pellet or flake food with brine shrimp, tubifex and bloodworms. Fish Laboratory adds vegetables to a similar list. Four food lists and every one of them puts sinking food first or second, which follows from the water column row rather than from a preference: a fish that sifts the bottom is not competing at the surface, and Seriously Fish gives poor competitive ability as a reason not to put it in a general community tank.

Seriously Fish describes the species as a benthic sifter, feeding by taking mouthfuls of substrate. Aquarium Source says they are primarily bottom dwelling, adding that it is not out of the question for them to visit the top.

Aquarium Co-Op publishes no water column at all. The row matters more here than on most records because of what it implies about the substrate: a sifting fish needs sand or fine gravel, which Aquarium Source asks for by name, and it is the same requirement our corydoras and kuhli loach records carry for the same reason.

Four sources, and none of them worried about the ram

Aquarium Co-Op calls them relatively peaceful, adding that they can be a bit feisty if the fish tank is too small. Aquarium Source calls them peaceful and very mellow. Fish Laboratory says not usually aggressive, but that they can get a bit aggressive without hiding spots. Seriously Fish does not use the word at all and says something more useful: it requires pristine water quality and is a poor competitor.

So the honest answer to the question people search for is that the ram is the one at risk. Aquarium Co-Op says to avoid super-fast eaters and larger fish like oscars; Seriously Fish says to avoid territorial or otherwise aggressive fishes, including most other cichlids. Both are protecting the ram rather than its tank mates, and the temperament field on this record says peaceful, and a poor competitor.

The publisher on both sides of one pairing

Four sources and four criteria, with only one of them usable on a single fish. Size, fin extension and color intensity all need a male beside the female to judge, and two sources describe the pink belly as a spawning condition rather than a permanent mark. Aquarium Co-Op’s is the mark that stands alone: a german blue ram female has tiny, bright blue dots inside the big, black flank spot, and a male has none.

The names on the tank

Aquarium Co-Op treats german blue, electric blue and gold as color varieties of one species and adds the balloon ram, which it describes as a shortened body shape. Wikipedia lists electric blue, gold, balloon and long-finned varieties. Blue ram and german blue ram are the same fish, and no source we hold publishes a separate care figure for any line, so every row on this record applies to all of them.

The warning both technical sources give

Wikipedia: many varieties suffer from lower fertility, health problems, or reduced brood care. Seriously Fish: commercial strains are genetically weak, susceptible to disease, exhibit shortened life-spans and poor reproductive vigour, while wild fish are more demanding and suitable only for experienced aquarists.

Those two sentences are the buying instruction on this species, and they explain the lifespan row better than the lifespan figures do: a source saying 2 to 3 years and a source saying up to 4 may be describing different stock rather than disagreeing.

What this record will not do with that

It will not tell you which line the fish in front of you is, because nothing on a tank label says so and none of our sources publishes a test. It will not rank the varieties either: two sources warn about them as a group and neither singles one out.

What it can do is print the same nine fields for all of them and name the risk. An electric blue ram is not a harder fish to keep on any figure we hold, it is a fish more likely to have come from stock the most technical source describes as genetically weak. That is a claim about a supply chain, not about a species, and it is the reason this station exists rather than a row.

A different species, not a different color

These are two species in one genus: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi and Mikrogeophagus altispinosus. The Bolivian is twice the standard length, wants water six to nine degrees cooler, wants a footprint half again as large, and comes from the upper rio Madeira basin in Bolivia and Brazil rather than the Orinoco.

Seriously Fish makes the recommendation this comparison is usually searched for: the Bolivian ram is arguably a better choice for less-experienced aquarists than its congener, while being a larger, less-colourful fish lacking blue iridescent markings. It says the same thing about both species’ tanks, though: neither is recommended for the general community aquarium, because both require pristine water quality and are poor competitors.

What that means on this site

The Bolivian ram is a name in the queue on our freshwater fish silo with no record behind it yet, so the figures above are the only ones we hold for it. The three care sheets give 2 to 2.5, 2 to 3 and around 2 inches, almost certainly measured to the tip. The row prints both ends because no source says which measurement it used, and a reader comparing the two figures is comparing two rulers rather than two fish.

Yes, and set higher than for almost anything else here. At 84 to 85 °F this is the warmest record on this site except the discus, and it is one of nine records whose band shares nothing with the 75 to 77 °F the rest of the site holds in common. Aquarium Co-Op ties the figure to health rather than to comfort, saying that at 84 to 86 they settle in better, are less susceptible to diseases and lose fewer fry when breeding.

As a monogamous pair on a flat surface, and both parents stay with the eggs.
