A ramshorn snail is a family, and it breathes air
Most people meet this animal without buying it. A ramshorn snail arrives on a plant, breeds without a partner, and the label on the shop tank names a family of about 250 species.
Wikipedia gives the family: Planorbidae are air-breathing freshwater snails, aquatic pulmonate gastropod molluscs, in three subfamilies, with about 250 freshwater species. The shells are coiled in one plane and most are more or less coiled flat rather than having an elevated spire, which is the flat disk shape the common name describes.
The anatomy is the part no care sheet we read mentions. Being pulmonates, these snails have a lung rather than gills, so a ramshorn is an air breather in the same sense our gourami guide describes: it has to be able to reach the surface. And the blood is unusual: Wikipedia records that they have iron-based hemoglobin instead of copper-based hemocyanin, which allows them to breathe oxygen more efficiently than other molluscs and gives their bodies a reddish color.
Our three care sources stop at the family. Aquarium Source and Fishkeeping World both write Planorbidae and no species. Aquarium Care Basics lists trade names instead: common ramshorn, red ramshorn, blue ramshorn and pink ramshorn.
So this record prints a family where most records here print a binomial, and it is the third to do so. Our flowerhorn record has no scientific name at all, because the animal is a hybrid. Our siamese algae eater record prints a genus because its sources cannot agree on the species. This one prints a family because not one of our sources goes further than that.

The water, and a source that disagrees with itself twice

Two of the three care sources publish identical figures and the third is wider on every row. The record prints what all three contain: 70 to 78 °F and pH 7.0 to 7.5.
The wide source does not agree with itself. Fishkeeping World prints its temperature range as 64 to 86 °F and, in the same line, as 23 to 28 C. Those are not the same range: 23 to 28 C is 73.4 to 82.4 °F. We print the Fahrenheit figures as published and take neither as the band.
On hardness the units do not line up either. Fishkeeping World gives 8 to 18 dGH, 143 to 322 ppm, which is the only general hardness figure on the record and therefore the one the row carries. Aquarium Source gives 5 to 15 dKH, which measures carbonate hardness rather than general hardness. Aquarium Care Basics gives a direction rather than a number.
All three agree about which way to be wrong. Fishkeeping World: low dGH or pH cause shell weakness and decay. Aquarium Care Basics: if calcium levels are sufficient, a ramshorn snail will grow thick, healthy, crack-free shells. That is the same chemistry our nerite snail and assassin snail records carry, where a shell is 95 percent calcium carbonate and acid water works against it.
Ramshorn snail size and ramshorn snail colors
The size, and the page that prints two of them
- Aquarium Source: the average ramshorn snail size is about one inch in diameter.
- Aquarium Care Basics: slightly larger than a dime under the right conditions, which is about 0.7 in, and with a little luck they can grow larger still. It puts young snails at purchase around a quarter inch.
- Fishkeeping World: the ramshorn snail grows to 1 inch in diameter in the wild and in captivity. And, further down the same page, a full-grown ramshorn grows to 1 to 2 inches in width, including the shell.
A ramshorn is a flat coil, so the diameter and the width are the same measurement, which means the last two figures cannot both be right. The row prints 0.7 to 1 in, which two sources support, and leaves the 2 in figure attributed rather than averaged.
Read that against the animals written to eat it. Our assassin snail record carries 1 to 1.2 in, so a full grown ramshorn is roughly the size of the snail that hunts it, and Aquarium Breeder says on that record that larger snails are taken if the assassins gang up.
The colors, and where the red comes from
Aquarium Care Basics names the trade varieties: common, red, blue and pink ramshorn snails. Aquarium Source describes the animal rather than the label, saying the skin can be black or red, that shells commonly feature shades of light or dark brown, and that some have blue shells, red shells and even spotted shells.
Fishkeeping World gives the mechanism for the commonest pair: the most common color for a ramshorn snail’s skin is black, and some specimens lack melanin, and their skin appears red.
Wikipedia supplies what the red is, and no care source we read makes the connection: the family has iron-based hemoglobin instead of copper-based hemocyanin, and the hemoglobin gives their bodies a reddish color. Put the two together and a red ramshorn is a snail whose blood is visible through unpigmented skin. That reading is ours, assembled from two sources that each publish half of it.
What no source publishes is a care difference between the colors, which is the same finding our honey gourami and flowerhorn records reached about their own strain names.

Every record here names a disagreement. On this one the same chemical is a treatment in one source and a hazard in another, and both sources agree it is lethal.
Fishkeeping World
Copper treatments are fatal to ramshorn snails, and are commonly used as a removal method when a tank's snail population grows too large.
Aquarium Care Basics
Avoid copper. Even in small amounts, copper can be fatal.
What we record: we print both, and this is the one dispute on this site where the two sources are not contradicting each other about a fact. They agree on the pharmacology exactly and disagree about whether the animal is a pet.
One is writing a care sheet for a snail somebody keeps; the other is writing the removal section of a care sheet for a snail somebody has too many of. Both statements are true and the reader has to decide which situation they are in.
What neither source says, and what our own records do, is what else copper does to a tank: our nerite snail record carries copper as lethal in trace amounts, our assassin snail record carries a source asking for the animal to be removed before any copper-based medication goes in, and every shrimp record here says the same. Copper does not distinguish between the snail you wanted and the snail you did not.
Do ramshorn snails reproduce asexually? They are hermaphrodites, which is not the same thing
This is the most searched question about the animal after its care, and the precise answer matters because the two words point to different outcomes.
Fishkeeping World: as this species is hermaphroditic, two snails in the same tank will breed quickly, and each specimen has both female and male sex characteristics. Aquarium Source: these snails are hermaphrodites.
Do ramshorn snails reproduce asexually is the question people type, and the answer is no: asexual would mean one snail can populate a tank on its own, while hermaphroditic means either snail can be either parent, so any two are a pair. Are ramshorn snails asexual has the same answer for the same reason. Our sources say hermaphrodite and none of them says asexual, and neither do we.
Put that beside our assassin snail record and the contrast is the whole reason one animal is sold and the other arrives uninvited. That species is gonochoristic: sexes are separate, males and females are indistinguishable, and a colony needs two of the right kind. The assassin snail cannot run away with your tank and the ramshorn can.
How do ramshorn snails reproduce, and the eggs
All three care sources describe the same clutch and two of them disagree about the timetable by a month.
- Aquarium Source: the clusters usually contain about 12 clear eggs. After several days the baby snail inside will be visible, and not long after that the tiny snails will emerge.
- Aquarium Care Basics: the egg clutches are clear, jelly-like globs containing what appear to be about one dozen round areas, each with a little dot. After a couple of days the dots change appearance, and soon thereafter the little translucent-white snails can be observed wiggling their way out.
- Fishkeeping World: ramshorns lay eggs in clusters of 10 to 12, with a two to four weeks hatching period.
So two sources describe eggs hatching in days and one gives two to four weeks. That is the same shape of disagreement our assassin snail record carries, where three sources say three to four weeks and one says 46 to 58 days. On both records the figure a keeper needs, how long to wait before deciding a clutch has failed, is the figure our sources cannot settle.
How many ramshorn snails per gallon, and what a baby ramshorn snail needs
Nobody publishes a figure, and two sources publish the opposite problem. Aquarium Source: they lay eggs so often that it does not take long for the snail population to increase dramatically. Fishkeeping World: ramshorn snails can thrive in an aquarium with no additional feeding, and two snails in the same tank will breed quickly.
The only lever any source offers is food. Aquarium Care Basics: one way hobbyists control ramshorn snail reproduction is to control feeding. On the young, the same source is the only one to describe them: a baby ramshorn snail leaves the clutch translucent-white and is around a quarter inch at the size shops sell them, and nothing our sources publish asks for anything different from the adults, so breeding ramshorn snails is less a project than a consequence. That is why the group size row on this record is blank rather than filled with a number: on this animal the population is an outcome, not a setting.
Do ramshorn snails eat plants? Only when the rest runs out
Three sources answer and all three answer the same way, which is unusual enough on this site to say plainly: yes, but not first.
- Aquarium Source: ramshorn snails are perfectly capable of eating live plants, however they will only do so if they are not getting enough food elsewhere.
- Fishkeeping World: typically, ramshorn snails do not eat live plant matter unless they cannot find algae or tank waste.

The third source moves the question from the snail to the plant, which is the most useful version of the answer: a hard-leaved plant is a different proposition from a soft-leaved one.

No source we hold names any of the three in connection with this snail, so the record does not refuse or clear any of them. What it can do is print the rule and the leaf type and let a reader apply one to the other.
The rest of the diet is the reason the plant question usually stays theoretical. This is the first record on this site whose predator list is mostly other records here, and the reason is worth stating: a ramshorn snail is the animal a keeper wants removed, so the sources that mention it at all often mention it as food.
Our snails silo now holds three records and the arithmetic in it is uncomfortable. The nerite snail is refused against three records, this one against three, and the third snail is the one doing the eating. Two of the three animals in that silo are food for something else on this site.
What none of our sources will do is tell you how fast a predator clears a population. Our clown loach record carries aqua-fish saying its impact is limited compared to other methods, which is the only qualification anybody offers, and station 08 is about the method our sources actually recommend instead.
The copper fork, and why both sources are right
The two sentences
Fishkeeping World, in the section on controlling numbers: copper treatments are fatal to ramshorn snails, and are commonly used as a removal method when a tank’s snail population grows too large.
Aquarium Care Basics, in the section on keeping them alive: avoid copper. Even in small amounts, copper can be fatal.
Those two sentences agree about the chemistry and disagree about the animal. One is a care sheet for a snail somebody keeps and the other has a removal section for a snail somebody has too many of, and this record cannot resolve that because it is not a factual disagreement. It is the same animal in two situations.
What our own records add
Neither source mentions the rest of the tank, and our records do.
- Our nerite snail record carries copper as lethal in trace amounts.
- Our assassin snail record carries Aquarium Breeder saying the species is sensitive to copper-based medications and asking for the animals to be removed before treating fish for ich or parasites.
- Our clown loach record carries the opposite argument for a fish: one source says the species can be treated with copper-based medicines and another says it has small or no scales and should not take a full dose.
So copper is a removal method for one snail, a hazard to the snail people pay for, a hazard to the snail that eats the first one, and a disputed treatment for a fish. It does not distinguish between them.
Our water and health page holds the line this record keeps: no dose, no product, no protocol. What it will print is that the method one source recommends for a pest is the method another source warns will kill a pet, and that both are describing the same molecule.
