One source’s ideal is another’s warning line, and they are four degrees apart
Betta fish water temp is the most searched parameter for this species and our two care sources contradict each other head on. Aquarium Co-Op puts the preference at 80 °F. Fishkeeping World puts the ideal at 75 to 76 and says that at 80 the fish starts showing poor tolerance. One page’s target is the other page’s first symptom.
Aquarium Co-Op: betta fish prefer temperatures around 80°F. It asks for a heater without qualification, and gives the reason from the other end: at typical American room temperatures of 67°F to 69°F a betta becomes quite lethargic and may even become sick from the constant stress of being too cold, where warmer water makes the fish much more active.
Fishkeeping World: the ideal betta temperature is 75° to 76° Fahrenheit, and then the line that collides with the figure above: once it reaches 80°F and above, your betta will start showing signs of poor tolerance to the higher temperature. It gives two mechanisms, and they are the same mechanism twice: the hotter the water, the lower the concentration of oxygen in the water, while higher temperature raises the metabolic demand for oxygen at the same time.
Both cannot be right, and this guide does not pretend to settle it. What it can do is set both against the reference source and against our own record, which is what stations 02 and 03 do. Seriously Fish gives the species a range of 22 to 30 °C, 72 to 86 °F, which contains every figure on this page including both of the ones that disagree.

Read the right-hand column and something awkward falls out. The species range published by the reference source contains, at both ends, temperatures a care source describes as fatal. Seriously Fish gives 72 to 86 °F. Fishkeeping World says at 85 °F and above the fish will die, which is one degree inside that ceiling, and that below 68 it most probably will not survive, which is four degrees below the floor.
That is not a contradiction so much as two different measurements wearing the same units, and it is the same distinction our black molly record draws about salinity. A published range is what the animal tolerates. A recommended figure is where it does well. Seriously Fish is describing the first and the care sources are arguing about the second, and only one of those two numbers belongs on an equipment setting.
The rows between 74 and 80 are where the disagreement actually lives, and they are only six degrees wide. Fishkeeping World puts the ideal at 75 to 76, thriving up to 78, and problems from 80. Aquarium Co-Op puts the preference at 80 flat. There is no figure both sources call good: Co-Op’s single recommendation sits exactly on the line Fishkeeping World calls the start of poor tolerance.
What they do agree on is the direction of the risk below the range, and they agree closely. Co-Op: 67 to 69 °F produces lethargy and constant stress. Fishkeeping World: below 70 the fish becomes lethargic, and 68 is far too cold. Two sources, two different ideals, and one shared conclusion that an unheated room is the problem rather than any figure in the argument above.
Why our own record prints one number, when forty three others print a range
Our betta record publishes Around 80 °F in its temperature row. Every other record on this site publishes a span. Of forty five records, forty three print a range and two print a single figure, the betta and our clown loach record at 82 °F.
The reason is the width of the alternative. The betta’s underlying band is 72 to 86 °F, fourteen degrees, which ties our common pleco record for the fifth widest band on this site. Printing 72 to 86 in the row would be accurate about the species and useless as an instruction, because both ends of it are temperatures a care source says will kill the fish.
So the row carries the preference and the record carries the tolerance underneath, in the fields the site uses for the pairings grid: a floor of 72, a ceiling of 86, and an ideal of 80. That is the same fish described twice on purpose, once for a keeper setting a heater and once for a grid working out which records can share water.
It also means our record has picked a side in the argument in station 01, and this guide should say so plainly. The 80 °F on our betta record is Aquarium Co-Op’s figure, and Fishkeeping World would call it the start of poor tolerance. Our record’s own note records the provenance: the preferred figure from Aquarium Co-Op, inside the range Seriously Fish records, with Fishkeeping World giving the same 72 to 86 and PetMD much tighter at 76 to 81.
Read PetMD’s 76 to 81 as the tiebreaker and it contains both disputed figures, Fishkeeping World’s 76 at the bottom and Co-Op’s 80 near the top. That is probably the honest answer to the question this page is named for: anywhere from 76 to 80 °F is defended by at least one source, the middle of that is defended by all of them, and the argument is about which end of a four degree window to aim at rather than about what a betta needs.
If you want one number to set a heater to, 78 °F is inside every range on this page: inside Fishkeeping World’s thriving band of 75 to 78, inside PetMD’s 76 to 81, below the 80 where Fishkeeping World reports problems, and two degrees under Aquarium Co-Op’s preference. No source names 78 as ideal and no source objects to it, which on a question this contested is the most a guide can honestly offer.
The heater, and the one thing every source on this page agrees about
Ask whether a betta needs a heater and the disagreement in station 01 disappears. Aquarium Co-Op, asked directly: yes, they do. Fishkeeping World: the only way to maintain the ideal temperature in your aquarium is by using a heat pump, and it must run continuously under thermostat control.
The reason is not the average temperature of a room, it is the swing. A room that sits at 72 °F in the afternoon is colder at four in the morning, and a betta is cold-blooded: Fishkeeping World notes it cannot generate internal heat and must absorb it from its surroundings. A heater with a thermostat is a stability device before it is a warming device, which is why Fishkeeping World says one should be used even where the ambient temperature is already warm.
On changing the temperature, the same source is specific about the manner rather than the amount: add very warm, not boiling, water slowly, or replace water very gradually, to avoid stressing the fish. That is the one instruction on this page about the rate of change rather than the level, and it is the one most likely to matter during a water change.
Where the heater question does connect to the argument is the tank, and Aquarium Co-Op ties them together. It recommends against a bowl in plain terms: if you haven’t bought a small bowl yet, we highly recommend that you get a larger aquarium that holds at least 5 to 10 gallons of water, and at least 10 to 20 gallons for a community tank. A bowl is a temperature problem as much as a space problem, because a small volume of water tracks the room, and most heaters will not fit one.

One last comparison, because it puts the whole page in proportion. Measuring it and holding it, and the source that says not to trust your heater’s own dial
A fourth source settles more of the argument in station 01 than either of the two having it. Chewy: the ideal betta fish water temperature is 76 to 82 F, with 78 to 80 F being the sweet spot for most bettas. That band contains Fishkeeping World’s 76 at the bottom and Aquarium Co-Op’s 80 at the top, and its sweet spot contains the 78 °F this guide arrived at independently in station 03.
It is also the only source we hold that gives a heater size, which matters because a betta tank is small enough that the wrong wattage overshoots. A general rule when choosing a heater is 3 to 5 watts per gallon of water, which it works through: a 5-gallon tank wants a 15 to 25-watt heater. Against our betta record’s 5 to 10 gallons that is 15 to 50 watts across the range.
And it gives the instruction that undoes the most common way this goes wrong: never rely solely on your heater’s dial. Use thermometers in your tank. It ranks them, digital aquarium thermometers, most accurate, then glass floating thermometers, then stick-on thermometers, less precise but helpful, and asks you to check the temperature daily to ensure consistency. A dial is a setting and a thermometer is a measurement, and on a four degree argument the difference between those two is the whole question.
Most of what moves a small tank is not the heater, it is the room, and Chewy names the places to avoid: put the tank away from windows, exterior doors, air vents, direct sunlight. For the hot end its advice is short because the options are: avoid direct sunlight and monitor for temperatures above 82 F. For a power cut it gives the only physical instruction on this page: wrap the tank in blankets to retain heat temporarily. Avoid opening the lid frequently, which allows heat to escape.
