The second plant record, and the one that settles a question

Our plants silo says a plant record earns its place when it can say which of our animals will eat it. The first one could not. Hornwort printed one source stating that goldfish do not eat it against another stating that goldfish should be kept away from it, and we published both rather than pick. On java fern the sources do not split.

Microsorum pteropus is the name on every care page our sources publish, and the name on the bag in most shops. Wikipedia files the same plant under Leptochilus pteropus and gives Microsorum pteropus as the synonym, and Aquarium Store Depot is the only care source here that prints both. Seven sources, and five of them say the same thing in different words: the leaves are too tough or they taste bad, and most fish will not eat them. Aquarium Store Depot gives the mechanism, that java fern foliage contains some chemicals that taste bad for plant-eating fish. Aquarium Co-Op gives the same finding from the other end: most fish do not like the taste of java fern, so even many plant eating fish will not eat it. Four of the seven name goldfish specifically as an animal this plant survives, which is the question our goldfish record leaves open.

Three of our own records named java fern before this page existed, more than any plant except java moss. Our angelfish record carries PetVet Care Centers naming it as easy to care for and doing well in most freshwater aquariums. Our otocinclus record carries Splashy Fish naming it in a list of six. Our kuhli loach record carries aqua-fish naming it alongside anubias, cryptocoryne wendtii and amazon sword.

What the sources will not agree on is light. One publishes a recommended floor of 60 PAR and another states a ceiling of under 50. Station 03 prints both and this record carries neither, because the plants silo said the light row would be a demand rather than a figure and this is why.

Why this record was written now

The gap
Three records here already cited java fern from their own sources, and the plant those sources named had no page. It is also the second most searched plant on our list, behind hornwort by about a thousand searches a month.
What it changes
The plants silo drops from thirteen queued names to twelve, and the eaten by row agrees across every source that states it for the first time on this site.
What it does not
Two figures are refused. No PAR number, because the two sources that publish one contradict each other, and no general hardness band, because the three that publish a hardness figure give carbonate hardness in dKH instead.

The java fern rhizome never goes in the substrate

Six of our seven sources state this as a rule and one calls it the number one mistake in the hobby. It is the whole of how to plant java fern, and the instruction is that you do not plant it.

  • Aquarium Store Depot. Never bury the java fern rhizome in substrate. The rhizome must stay fully exposed and attached to hardscape. Once buried, the rhizome rots and the plant dies. It repeats it as the number one mistake: bury it in sand or gravel and it rots, every time.
  • Aquarium Co-Op. The only thing to watch out for is that you don't bury the rhizome, the twig like portion of the plant. If it is buried under gravel or sand it will rot. It also states the plant does not require substrate, making java fern ideal for bare bottom tanks.
  • Aquarium Breeder. One thing you should never do is burying the rhizomes down the substrate or it will rot.
  • Buce Plant. Its rhizome, the stem-like structure where leaves grow, must stay exposed, or the plant will rot.
  • Splashy Fish. Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can lead to rot and hinder the plant's growth.
  • Wikipedia. The biology under all five: java ferns are epiphytes, they attach to surfaces rather than rooting in substrate. It describes aquarium cultivation as tying or glueing the roots coming from the rhizome to rock or driftwood.

The seventh source is the one worth reading closely. Modest Fish opens by disputing the advice: everywhere you look, you'll see sources that tell you not to bury java fern down in the substrate because it will rot, in my experience, this is true and false. Then it states the same rule anyway, that you don't want to bury the rhizomes down in the gravel, they will definitely rot over time. The disagreement turns out to be about roots against rhizome rather than about whether you can plant it, and it is the only source here that raises the distinction at all.

So the substrate row on this record reads none, the rhizome must stay exposed, and the practical instruction is that java fern is attached to something. Our sources name three ways and between them they name nothing else: gel superglue, cotton or synthetic thread, and fishing line. Aquarium Store Depot adds rubber bands and wedging the rhizome into a hole or crack, and Buce Plant adds plant weights. Aquarium Co-Op's own preference is the shortest answer on the page: my favorite way to plant java fern is to use super glue gel.

This is the second plant record here that fails the same way for a different reason. Hornwort has no rhizome and no roots at all, so there is nothing to bury and the stem rots if you try. Java fern has both, and the roots are not the problem: the rhizome is. Two records, two plants, and the same sentence at the end of both, which is that a plant record's substrate row is the one to read before you buy.

Java fern light requirements, where the numbers contradict

The plants silo states that light is recorded as a demand rather than a lumen figure, because tank depth changes what a fixture delivers at the substrate. Two sources published numbers anyway, in the right unit, and they do not agree.

Read the PAR column and the problem is plain. Aquarium Store Depot's recommendation starts at 60 and Modest Fish's whole band ends below 50, so a keeper following one is outside the other. Aquarium Store Depot also disagrees with itself: its care box gives 40 to 125 and its text says to aim for about 60 to 125, which is a floor twenty points apart in the same article.

Three sources describe the failure at the top rather than the bottom. Aquarium Co-Op says at the very high end range of light you can actually burn or melt it. Aquarium Store Depot says too much light causes brown spots and leaf burn, and that if you see brown patches spreading across the leaves and your light is strong, move the plant to a shadier position. Splashy Fish says to avoid excessive light, as it can cause the leaves to turn brown or black. Aquarium Breeder agrees, that java fern doesn't need strong lighting conditions as this can burn the leaves and make them develop brown spots. Only Modest Fish points the other way, that the plant tolerates more intense light and will grow more quickly under brighter lights.

For a plant whose common complaint is a burned leaf, that lopsidedness decides how we read the contradiction: the row prints low is enough, moderate is the highest any source asks for, and no number at all.

CO2 is not required, and one source recommends it anyway

Four sources state it and none of them asks for it. Aquarium Store Depot gives CO2 requirement, no, and that CO2 injection isn't really necessary for healthy java fern growth. Aquarium Breeder says it is not really a necessity but if you want your fern to grow faster than normal then you definitely need to supply extra CO2. Modest Fish: you don't need CO2 to grow java fern, of course it will grow quicker if you do use it. Buce Plant is the odd one, listing the CO2 requirement as not need, but always recommended.

That is beneficial on the silo's three way scale of required, beneficial or unnecessary, and it is the same answer hornwort got. Two plant records, and neither of them needs a CO2 system, which is the field the silo calls the one that decides whether a plant belongs in a beginner tank.

Splashy Fish is the only source that puts the optimum above low: moderate lighting is optimal for java fern, it can tolerate low-light conditions but may grow slower. Wikipedia is the widest of all, that it can be cultivated in tap water, dim or bright light, with or without gravel.

Modest Fish gives mid to background. Splashy Fish puts it differently and says the same thing: unlike many aquarium plants that require planting on the substrate, java fern prefers to anchor itself to surfaces. Nothing here belongs in the foreground, and the height figures in station 09 are why.

Growth rateSlow. A new leaf in two to four weeks

Aquarium Store Depot is the only source with a timescale: growth rate, slow, and under low to moderate light without CO2, a new leaf takes two to four weeks to fully develop. It also warns not to expect the tank to fill in within a few weeks.

Aquarium Co-Op and Modest Fish both give slow, and Aquarium Co-Op names the consequence: since this plant is such a slow grower, it can have terrible fights with algae. Aquarium Breeder and Buce Plant both give slow to moderate, and Buce Plant adds a diagnostic figure rather than a growth figure, that changes in light or nutrients might take up to two weeks to show results.

Aquarium Breeder is the one source that puts a lifespan on the plant, up to 2 years, and no other source here mentions one.

PropagationPlantlets on the leaf tips, or rhizome division

Two methods, and every source names at least one. Wikipedia: the plant will readily propagate asexually by producing small, adventitious plantlets from the leaf tips and margins, and the small sprouts quickly develop roots of their own.

Aquarium Co-Op: tiny java ferns are formed at the edge of the leaves, once they mature they drop off, and you can also break leaves off and let them float in the aquarium. It adds the emergency version, that if it starts to die it immediately produces new plantlets, sometimes as many as 20 babies per leaf.

Aquarium Store Depot names them correctly, adventitious plantlets, and gives the timing rule: wait until the plantlets have a few leaves and roots before you remove them from the parent plant. For the second method it says to divide the rhizome and always cut a section that has some roots, and preferably some leaves as well.

Aquarium Breeder gives both, splitting the rhizomes into desired sizes and the plantlets on the leaf tips. Modest Fish sums up what all of them describe: frankly, it usually does a great job of propagating itself.

Temperature72 to 82 °F

Four bands, no two identical, and 72 to 82 is the only span all four contain. Aquarium Breeder gives 68 to 82 °F, 20 to 28 C, as preferred. Aquarium Store Depot gives 64 to 82 °F, 18 to 28 C, which is the widest here.

Splashy Fish gives 72 to 82 °F, 22 to 28 C. Modest Fish gives 70 to 83 °F as ideal. Aquarium Co-Op publishes no temperature at all and describes the tolerance instead, from soft acidic water to alkaline conditions, and even brackish tanks.

pH6.0 to 7.5

Three sources give 6.0 to 8.0 and one gives 6.0 to 7.5, so the row prints the span all four contain. Aquarium Breeder: 6.0 to 8.0, and it is known to tolerate a wide pH range. Aquarium Store Depot: 6.0 to 8.0, and they do prefer soft acidic water but will do just fine in slightly alkaline conditions too.

Modest Fish: 6.0 to 8.0. Splashy Fish: it generally thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. On hardness the three sources that publish a figure all publish the same one and all publish it in the wrong unit for comparing against our animal records: 2 to 15 dKH, which is carbonate hardness rather than the general hardness those records carry.

Modest Fish converts it to 33.3 to 250.1 ppm. Aquarium Breeder describes the tolerance in words as well, soft to moderately hard water, can thrive in hard water also.

Eaten byAlmost nothing, and one snail we now hold a record for

The field this plant is bought for, and the first field on any plant record here where the sources agree. Aquarium Co-Op: most fish do not like the taste of java fern, so even many plant eating fish will not eat it, and the leaves are also very thick and rugged, they can take a beating from a large cichlid or some goldfish who just like to play with them.

Aquarium Store Depot gives the mechanism: java fern foliage contains some chemicals that taste bad for plant-eating fish, which means they are one of the few safe options for keeping with almost all tropical fish, and it names betta fish, plecos, rasboras, danios, tetras, cherry barbs, corydoras, goldfish, small cichlids and otos. Aquarium Breeder: it is hardy and tough which makes it difficult for herbivorous, nippy fishes to feed on them, and java fern can withstand aggression from cichlids, oscar, goldfish species that normally eat aquatic plants, they find java fern to be unappetizing due to their hard leaves.

Buce Plant: its tough leaves can handle grazing fish like goldfish or cichlids. Modest Fish agrees and then breaks the pattern with its own tank: apparently it's not very tasty, this is a good thing, and a lot of herbivorous fish like plecos won't completely destroy your ferns to eat them, but I had a very large green severum that did destroy and eat the java fern.

Two sources name animals to avoid: Aquarium Breeder says to avoid keeping them with large species of crayfish as they are known to destroy the plant, and Aquarium Store Depot says large predator fish and aggressive New World cichlid types should also be avoided, and that mature plants are usually fine with African cichlids while young growth and young plants might still take some damage. Splashy Fish is the only source that calls the leaves delicate rather than tough, and the only one to warn off a small fish: avoid tiger barbs and other fin-nipping varieties, as they might damage the delicate leaves of java fern.

Wikipedia adds the invertebrate half, that it is more snail resistant and grows better with higher fish loads, and Aquarium Breeder names it one of the best plants for shrimp tanks and snails, listing cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, amano shrimp, ramshorn, nerite, Malaysian trumpet and mystery snails. Added with our rabbit snail record: two of that record’s six sources say rabbit snails are not really interested in eating plants except java ferns, which they like to feast on.

One of those two is Aquarium Breeder, which is also one of the five sources above, and on this plant it names java fern one of the best plants for shrimp tanks and snails while listing cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, amano shrimp, ramshorn, nerite, Malaysian trumpet and mystery snails. Both statements can stand, since that list does not include this snail, but the water makes it a live question: this record runs 72 to 82 °F and the rabbit snail record 78 to 84, so they overlap from 78 to 82.

Where our sources disagree

Every record here names a disagreement. On the first plant record it was about which animals eat the plant. On this one the sources agree about that and cannot agree about light, which is the field the silo predicted would be the argument.

Aquarium Store Depot

Aim for about 60 to 125 PAR of light and provide your plants with a photoperiod of 6 to 10 hours per day.

Modest Fish

Java fern only requires low light (PAR <50).

What we record: we carry neither figure, because one source's recommended floor sits above the other's stated ceiling and there is no reading of the two that leaves them both standing. The row prints a demand instead, which is what the silo said the light field would be: low is enough, moderate is the most any source asks for.

What can be said is narrower and more useful than either number. Five of the seven sources say low light grows this plant, only one calls moderate optimal, and three of them describe the failure mode at the top end rather than the bottom: Aquarium Co-Op says at the very high end you can burn or melt it, Aquarium Store Depot says too much light causes brown spots and leaf burn, and Splashy Fish says excessive light can cause the leaves to turn brown or black.

Modest Fish is alone in saying it grows more quickly under brighter lights. For a plant whose common failure is a burned leaf, the safe reading of a contradiction is the lower number.

How fast does java fern grow? Slowly, and that is the trade

One source gives a timescale and the rest give a word. The word is the same from all of them.

Aquarium Store Depot is the only source with a figure: under low to moderate light without CO2, a new leaf takes two to four weeks to fully develop. It also sets the expectation, that you should not expect the tank to fill in within a few weeks. Aquarium Co-Op and Modest Fish both file the growth rate as slow. Aquarium Breeder and Buce Plant both give slow to moderate, and Buce Plant adds a figure about diagnosis rather than growth: changes in light or nutrients might take up to two weeks to show results, which is why a java fern that looks wrong should not be moved twice in a fortnight.

Aquarium Co-Op names the cost of that slowness directly: since this plant is such a slow grower, it can have terrible fights with algae. A leaf that takes a month to build is a leaf algae has a month to colonize, which is the argument for keeping the light low that does not depend on the PAR figures nobody agrees on.

The two plant records here sit at opposite ends of this field

Our hornwort record carries Aquarium Co-Op stating that hornwort will easily grow 1 to 4 inches per week, and every source on that page repeats the same consequence, which is that it needs trimming regularly or it takes the tank. Java fern produces one leaf in the time hornwort produces a foot of stem. Growth rate is the field where these two plants are least alike, and on this site it is the field that decides whether a plant is an asset or a chore.

Aquarium Breeder is also the one source that gives java fern a lifespan, up to 2 years. No other source here mentions one, and the plant schema has no lifespan row, so the figure is recorded in this sentence rather than in a field.

Java fern propagation is two methods and no equipment

Every source names at least one, most name both, and one of them says the plant does the job without you.

Plantlets on the leaf tips

Wikipedia: the plant will readily propagate asexually by producing small, adventitious plantlets from the leaf tips and margins, and the small sprouts quickly develop roots of their own. Aquarium Co-Op describes the same thing in a tank: tiny java ferns are formed at the edge of the leaves, once they mature they drop off, and you can also break leaves off and let them float in the aquarium.

Aquarium Store Depot gives them their proper name, adventitious plantlets, and the only timing rule anyone publishes: wait until the java fern plantlets have a few leaves and roots first before you remove them from the parent plant. Modest Fish agrees and puts a number on the wait in leaves rather than weeks, that you wait until they have formed several leaves and trailing roots.

Aquarium Co-Op also records the emergency version. If it starts to die it immediately produces new plantlets, sometimes as many as 20 babies per leaf, which means a melting java fern is often a propagating java fern.

Dividing the rhizome

Aquarium Store Depot: an easy way to propagate new plants is to divide the rhizome, the thick, stem-like structure that the leaf stalks and roots grow from, and for the best results always cut a section that has some roots, and preferably some leaves as well. Aquarium Breeder gives the same method in one line, to split the rhizomes into desired sizes.

Neither method needs anything a keeper does not already own, which is a real difference from our breeding page, where most of the animal records need a separate tank and a food culture before anything survives. Modest Fish sums the field up: frankly, it usually does a great job of propagating itself.

The black dots under the leaves are the propagation

Three sources say the same thing and one of them calls the panic a misconception. Aquarium Store Depot: many beginners see dark spots on the leaf undersides and conclude the plant is sick, and those spots are sori, reproductive structures that produce spores, a sign of a healthy, mature plant. Aquarium Breeder: it is absolutely normal to have small dots because that is one of the ways to grow new java ferns, and the black spots beneath the leaves are a sign the parent plant is about to grow plantlets. It adds that black lines are just veins. Modest Fish: rows of dark brown or black spots on the underside of leaves is nothing to worry about.

Eaten by: almost nothing, and five sources say why

This is the field the plant is bought for, and it is the first field on any plant record here where the sources line up instead of splitting.

Two of them explain why, and they give different reasons. Aquarium Store Depot says java fern foliage contains some chemicals that taste bad for plant-eating fish, which means they are one of the few safe options for keeping with almost all tropical fish. Aquarium Breeder says it is hardy and tough which makes it difficult for herbivorous, nippy fishes to feed on them, and that they find java fern to be unappetizing due to their hard leaves. Chemistry in one, mechanics in the other, and Aquarium Co-Op carries both: most fish do not like the taste of java fern, and the leaves are also very thick and rugged.

Four sources name goldfish. Aquarium Breeder says java fern can withstand aggression from cichlids, oscar and goldfish, species that normally eat aquatic plants. Aquarium Store Depot lists goldfish among the fish it names as compatible. Buce Plant says its tough leaves can handle grazing fish like goldfish or cichlids. Aquarium Co-Op puts it in the language of damage rather than diet: the leaves can take a beating from a large cichlid or some goldfish who just like to play with them.

Our goldfish record carries Wikipedia stating that because goldfish eat live plants, their presence in a planted aquarium can be problematic, and our hornwort record could not resolve it for hornwort. For java fern it resolves, and this is the first plant record here that answers a question another record left open.

The animals our sources do name

  • Large crayfish. Aquarium Breeder: avoid pairing them with large species of crayfish as they are known to destroy the plant. We hold no crayfish record.
  • Large predators and aggressive New World cichlids. Aquarium Store Depot: their destructive habits can damage and destroy plants. Our oscar is a New World cichlid, and Aquarium Breeder names the oscar among the fish this plant withstands, so those two sources point in opposite directions about one animal we hold a record for.
  • African cichlids. Aquarium Store Depot again, and it splits the answer by age: mature plants are usually just fine but young growth and young plants might still take some damage. We hold no African cichlid record.
  • Tiger barbs and other fin-nippers. Splashy Fish, which is also the only source here that calls the leaves delicate rather than tough. Every other source on this record says the opposite about the same leaf.
  • Shrimp and snails. Aquarium Breeder names java fern one of the best plants for shrimp tanks and snails, listing cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, amano shrimp, and ramshorn, nerite, Malaysian trumpet and mystery snails. Wikipedia adds that it is more snail resistant and grows better with higher fish loads.

One source lost one. Modest Fish, having said the plant is not very tasty and that a lot of herbivorous fish like plecos won't completely destroy your ferns, then records its own exception: I had a very large green severum that did destroy and eat the java fern. That is the only first hand loss any of our seven sources reports, and it belongs on this page because a field with six sources agreeing is exactly the field where the seventh matters.

A reader comment under that same page states that java fern is not goldfish proof. We do not carry comments as sources on this site and it is not counted in the four above, and it is worth knowing that the disagreement exists in the place our sources are most united.

Four sources publish a temperature band and no two of them are identical. Three publish a hardness figure and all three publish the same one, in a unit this site does not use for its animal records.

Temperature. The four bands overlap on 72 to 82 °F and that is what the record prints, because it is the only span every published band contains. Aquarium Store Depot's floor of 64 is eight degrees below Splashy Fish's, and nothing on any of the four pages explains its own floor. Eight of our fourteen animal records sit entirely inside 72 to 82: amano shrimp, corydoras, ember tetra, ghost shrimp, kuhli loach, nerite snail, oscar and pea puffer. The water and health page carries the whole overlap chart.

pH. Three sources give 6.0 to 8.0 and Splashy Fish gives 6.0 to 7.5, so the row prints the narrower span all four contain. Aquarium Store Depot adds the preference behind the band, that they do prefer soft acidic water but will do just fine in slightly alkaline conditions too, and Splashy Fish says slightly acidic to neutral water supports the plant. Aquarium Breeder simply notes that it is known to tolerate a wide pH range.

Hardness, and why the row is not on this record. All three figures are 2 to 15 dKH, which is carbonate hardness. Every animal record on this site carries general hardness in ppm, converted from dGH, and the two are not the same measurement. Modest Fish is the only source that converts its own figure, to 33.3 to 250.1 ppm, and a single conversion from one source is not a hardness band. So the plant schema's nine fields do not include hardness, and this paragraph is where the figure lives instead.

Aquarium Co-Op is the outlier worth keeping: it publishes no water figures at all and describes the range in words, from soft acidic water to alkaline conditions, and even brackish tanks. Wikipedia's version is shorter still, that it can be cultivated in tap water, dim or bright light, with or without gravel.

Where java fern grows without anybody keeping it

The tolerance in those two sentences is downstream of where the plant lives. Wikipedia records Leptochilus pteropus predominantly from Malaysia, Thailand, Northeastern India and parts of South China, and describes it in its natural habitat growing attached to riparian roots and rocks. A riparian root is a root at the water line, which is why the same page says it can grow fully or partially submerged provided its roots and rhizome remain wet, and why Aquarium Store Depot says that in nature they grow outside of the water in tropical rainforest habitats.

That is the whole of the argument for attaching it to wood and rocks rather than planting it: a plant that spends its wild life gripping rocks at the edge of a stream has no use for substrate, and nothing about an aquarium changes what it is growing on. It is also why no source here treats hard tap water as a problem for it, while the light figures they publish are all over the place.

Windelov, narrow leaf, needle leaf, trident: same plant, same care

All seven sources list varieties and one of them settles the only question that matters about them. Aquarium Co-Op: each of these has a unique look to them with all the same growth requirements.

The height figures come from two sources and they are the reason the placement row says midground or background. Aquarium Breeder: this plant is relatively tall, it grows up to 12 inches, about 30 cm, in height and 6 to 8 inches, 15 to 20 cm, in width. Aquarium Store Depot: height 10 to 12 inches, 25 to 30 cm, and java ferns get pretty big, producing a number of large leaves. Its narrow leaf figures, from Aquarium Breeder, are 4 to 8 inches in size and up to 12 inches in height, and windelov java fern grows up to 8 inches tall.

Windelov java fern is the variety people search for by name and Aquarium Store Depot is the source that describes it usefully: the end of each leaf is split into three. Nothing on any of our seven pages gives windelov java fern care instructions that differ from the standard form, and Aquarium Co-Op states plainly that they share growth requirements, so every figure on this record applies to all of them.

Two names appear once each. Splashy Fish is the only source here that lists a Philippine java fern, and Wikipedia is the only one that lists a lance leaf variant, alongside the narrow leaf, needle leaf, windelov and trident cultivars. Neither gets its own figures on this record, because neither source gives any.

What this record will not answer

No PAR figure

Two sources publish one and they contradict each other, with a recommended floor of 60 sitting above a stated ceiling of under 50. One of the two also disagrees with itself, 40 in the care box and 60 in the text. A figure with that much spread is not a figure, so the light row prints the demand every source can live with.

No general hardness band

Three sources publish 2 to 15 dKH, which is carbonate hardness, and our animal records carry general hardness in ppm. One source converts its own figure and one conversion is not a band, so the plant schema has no hardness row and station 08 carries the figure in prose.

No minimum tank, though three sources publish one

Aquarium Breeder recommends a minimum of 10 gallons, about 40 liters. Aquarium Store Depot says it's best to use a tank size of at least 10 gallons, 38 L, and gives its reason, which is that the plant gets big. Modest Fish says I really wouldn't put java fern in a tank smaller than 10 gallons. All three agree, and the plant schema still has no minimum tank row, because what those three sources are describing is the height in station 09 rather than a requirement of the plant. Our stocking calculator reads minimum tank figures and does not read plant records at all, for the same reason.

Emersed growth, recorded but not a field

Aquarium Store Depot states that java ferns can grow very well partially submerged or emersed, out of water, in a very high humidity environment, and that in nature they grow outside of the water in tropical rainforest habitats. Wikipedia agrees that it can grow fully or partially submerged, provided its roots and rhizome remain wet. No field on this site records that, so it is recorded here.

Java fern care questions, answered from the record

Can I plant java fern in the substrate?

No, and this is the one instruction every source states. Aquarium Store Depot: never bury the java fern rhizome in substrate, once buried the rhizome rots and the plant dies. Aquarium Co-Op: if it is buried under gravel or sand it will rot. Wikipedia gives the reason, that java ferns are epiphytes which attach to surfaces rather than rooting in substrate. Attach it to driftwood or rock instead and leave the rhizome exposed.

How do I plant java fern on driftwood?

Our sources name three methods and nothing else: gel superglue, cotton or synthetic thread, and fishing line. Aquarium Store Depot adds rubber bands and wedging the rhizome into a hole or crack, and Buce Plant adds plant weights. Aquarium Co-Op's own preference is super glue gel. Aquarium Store Depot says to hold it there until the roots take hold, which is what anchors it after the glue or thread gives way.

Does java fern need CO2?

No. Aquarium Store Depot gives CO2 requirement, no. Aquarium Breeder says it is not really a necessity. Modest Fish says you don't need CO2 to grow java fern. Two of those three add that it grows faster with it, and Buce Plant lists it as not needed but always recommended. That is beneficial rather than required on the scale our plants silo uses, and it is the same answer our hornwort record gives.

What light does java fern need?

Low is enough and moderate is the highest any source asks for. Five of our seven sources say low light grows it, Splashy Fish is the only one that calls moderate optimal, and Wikipedia says dim or bright. The two sources that publish PAR figures contradict each other, so this record carries no number: Aquarium Store Depot recommends aiming for 60 to 125 PAR and Modest Fish states java fern only requires low light, PAR under 50.

Why is my java fern turning brown?

Four of our sources name light for it. Aquarium Store Depot: too much light causes brown spots and leaf burn, and if you see brown patches spreading across the leaves and your light is strong, move the plant to a shadier position in the tank. Aquarium Breeder: strong lighting can burn the leaves and make them develop brown spots. Splashy Fish: excessive light can cause the leaves to turn brown or black. Aquarium Co-Op: at the very high end range of light you can actually burn or melt it. Buce Plant adds two more causes for blackening, a lack of potassium and high ammonia from decaying organic matter. Nothing we read blames too little light for a brown leaf.

What are the black spots under the leaves?

Reproduction, and one source calls the alarm a misconception directly. Aquarium Store Depot: those spots are sori, reproductive structures that produce spores, and a sign of a healthy, mature plant. Aquarium Breeder: it is absolutely normal to have small dots because that is one of the ways to grow new java ferns, and their presence means the parent plant is about to grow plantlets. Modest Fish: nothing to worry about. Buce Plant is the one source that lists causes other than spores for blackening, naming potassium deficiency, too much light and high ammonia.

How fast does java fern grow?

Slowly. Aquarium Store Depot is the only source with a timescale: under low to moderate light without CO2, a new leaf takes two to four weeks to fully develop, and you should not expect the tank to fill in within a few weeks. Two sources file it as slow and two as slow to moderate. For comparison, our hornwort record carries 1 to 4 inches of growth a week from the same publisher.

Will my fish eat java fern?

Almost certainly not. Aquarium Co-Op: most fish do not like the taste of java fern, so even many plant eating fish will not eat it. Aquarium Store Depot gives the mechanism, that the foliage contains some chemicals that taste bad for plant-eating fish. Aquarium Breeder says the hard leaves make it difficult for nippy fish to feed on. The exceptions our sources name are large crayfish, large predators, aggressive New World cichlids against young growth, and tiger barbs. One source reports losing a plant to a very large green severum.

Is java fern safe with goldfish?

Four of our sources say so. Aquarium Breeder states it can withstand aggression from cichlids, oscar and goldfish, species that normally eat aquatic plants. Aquarium Store Depot lists goldfish among compatible fish. Buce Plant says the tough leaves can handle grazing fish like goldfish or cichlids. Aquarium Co-Op says the leaves can take a beating from a large cichlid or some goldfish who just like to play with them. Our goldfish record carries Wikipedia stating that goldfish eat live plants and can be problematic in a planted aquarium, so this is the plant that answers it rather than the plant that argues with it.

Is java fern safe with shrimp and snails?

Aquarium Breeder names java fern one of the best plants for shrimp tanks and snails, and lists species we hold records for: cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, amano shrimp and the nerite snail, along with ramshorn, Malaysian trumpet and mystery snails. Wikipedia adds that it is more snail resistant than other aquarium plants.

What is windelov java fern?

A named variety with branched leaf tips. Aquarium Store Depot describes it as having finely branched leaf tips with the end of each leaf split into three, and Aquarium Breeder gives it a height of up to 8 inches, 20 cm. Windelov java fern care is not different from the standard form: Aquarium Co-Op states that the varieties each have a unique look with all the same growth requirements, so every figure on this record applies.

What is narrow leaf java fern?

The variety with a narrower leaf, named by six of our sources. Aquarium Breeder gives it as 4 to 8 inches, 10 to 20 cm, in size and up to 12 inches, 30 cm, in height. The needle leaf form is thinner again, and Aquarium Breeder puts it at about 6 inches, 15 cm. Care is the same as the standard plant.

Does java fern need fertilizer?

No source asks for it and three say what it buys. Aquarium Store Depot: java fern is able to thrive in low nutrient conditions, so additional feeding is not usually absolutely essential. Aquarium Breeder: the plant can survive without supplementing it with additional nutrients, but dosing it with fertilizers is capable of improving its growth rate. Modest Fish: you don't have to use fertilizer with java fern, but it will grow much more quickly if you use a liquid fertilizer. Buce Plant names one nutrient specifically, that potassium is its best friend, and says a deficiency shows as brown holes or pinholes in the leaves.

What tank size does java fern need?

Three sources say at least 10 gallons and all three are describing the plant's height rather than its needs. Aquarium Store Depot gives its reason directly, which is that java ferns get pretty big at 10 to 12 inches tall. The plant schema on this site has no minimum tank row and this record leaves it that way, because a plant does not occupy a volume the way an animal does. Our records index prints the plant fields and the animal fields as two separate tables for the same reason.

A record on this site now names this plant by name. aqua-fish asks for Anubias, java fern and Cryptocoryne in a honey gourami tank, plus floating Salvinia or Pistia to dim the light, and our honey gourami record carries that instruction. The water agrees without needing an argument: this record runs 72 to 82 °F and that one runs 74 to 81, so the plant band contains the fish band completely. It is also the first record here to ask for this plant on behalf of an animal rather than for its own sake.

A record here now names this plant as one of two that survive the worst tank on the site. Aquarium Store Depot, writing about the fish on our flowerhorn record, says a flowerhorn will uproot and consume plants and asks for unpalatable species that grow on objects rather than in the substrate, naming Anubias nana and java fern, with the warning to be prepared for some casualties. The reason it is named is the reason this record exists: a plant attached to wood or rock has nothing for a digging fish to pull up, which is the same property that makes it work in the bare tanks our own record describes. The water agrees as well, since this record runs 72 to 82 °F and that one runs 80 to 86, so the two meet from 80 to 82 and no further.

What java fern needs, and none of it is substrate
