Three fields, no formula. Everything above comes out of the records, which is why the tool can tell you when it has nothing.
Minimum tank decides who clears
Each record states the smallest volume its source supports at that species' group size. If your tank is under it, the species does not appear.
Group size decides the count
Six to ten ember tetras, three to six kuhli loaches, six corydoras of one species, one betta. These are the record's numbers, not a density calculation.
Water column decides the mix
One group per layer. Two species in the same layer are in each other's way, which matters more in a small tank than temperament does.
What this tool will not do

Individual temperament is the one variable no record holds. Every build above assumes cover and a way to separate fish.
Bioload, filtration and compatibility
Most aquarium stocking calculators return a bioload percentage: you enter a filter, they weigh its rated capacity against the adult size and waste output of each fish, and a bar fills up. This one returns no bioload figure at all, and the reason is not that the idea is wrong. It is that none of the care sources we compile from publishes a waste figure for a single one of these species, so any bioload number here would be arithmetic performed on estimates we invented.
The same goes for filtration. We record no filter rating, no turnover multiple and no recommendation, because our sources attach none to these species. Where filtration appears in a record it appears as a stated requirement in words, such as the gentle flow the kuhli loach record describes, or the slow flow and sponge filter that another record attributes to Aquarium Co-Op by name, and it stays in words.
Compatibility is the one of the three this tool does model, and it models it the hard way: not as a score but as a list of refusals, each one traceable to a source that says never. A stocking calculator that scores compatibility out of a hundred is telling you how confident it is. This one tells you which pairs a source ruled out, and prints nothing where no source ruled anything.
So if you have come here from a tool that told you a 10 gallon tank was 68 percent stocked, this page cannot reproduce that number and is not trying to. It answers a narrower question: which fish clear the gallons, how many of them the records state, and what never shares the tank.
Species this stocking calculator does not know
Every number on this page comes from forty records, and that is a small number of fish. The tool does not refuse to answer for a species because the species is unsuitable. It refuses because nobody here has read a source for it yet.
The gap most likely to matter at this size is the neon tetra, which is the fish most often bought for a 10 gallon tank and is not recorded here. We hold the ember tetra instead, and the two are not interchangeable: the group sizes and the temperature bands are recorded separately for a reason. Tetras in general are the single largest hole in this build, and the honest statement is that this tool knows one of them.

What planting changes, and what it does not
Every stocking guide for a 10 gallon tank mentions plants, and most of them leave you to guess what the plants are doing. On one record in this build a source is explicit about it, so that is the one worth reading.
Aquarium Co-Op attaches dense planting to the higher pea puffer counts rather than offering it as decoration: three fish in a 10 gallon tank, six or seven in a twenty, with dense planting. The plants are not filtration in that sentence. They are sight breaks between animals that would otherwise spend the day looking at each other.
What a planted tank does not buy you
This tool will not lower a stated minimum tank because the tank is planted, and no source we hold offers that trade. The two that mention planting both attach it to a count inside a volume, never to the volume itself. A heavily planted 5 gallon tank is still a 5 gallon tank.
The clearest case is the one this site refuses. A betta and a cherry shrimp colony is kept together successfully in heavily planted tanks, and what makes it work is losses you do not see. Plants change how many survive being watched. They do not change what is doing the watching.

Can you build a community tank from these records?
Not at five gallons. Ten records clear a 5 gallon tank on their own and none of them clears it next to another, so the answer there is one occupied layer and a choice about which.
At ten gallons a community of two starts to exist: a surface fish and one group, or one group and the floor crew. Twenty one of the forty records clear the volume, and clearing a volume is not the same as sharing it.
Above twenty gallons volume stops being the constraint, and the refusals take over instead. The pea puffer record is species only on both of its sources, so it does not join a community tank at any size in this build. The betta and shrimp combination is a refusal for a reason that does not improve with gallons. A community tank in the ordinary sense begins where the records stop objecting, not where the water runs out.
So the honest summary for anyone stocking a fish tank from this site: the gallon figure tells you who clears, the group size tells you how many fish, and the refusals tell you what never shares a tank. Two of those three come from the records rather than from arithmetic.
Questions about stocking a fish tank
How many fish in a 10 gallon tank?
From these records: one surface fish and one group, or one group and the floor crew. Not both groups. Twenty one of the forty records clear ten gallons, but clearing a volume alone is not the same as sharing it, and no source we compile from supports two schools at this size.
The count is set by the group, not by the tank. The ember tetra record states 8 to 10, the corydoras catfish and otocinclus records both state 6 or more of one species, and the guppy record states a trio or more. Pick one of those, at its stated number.
How many fish in a 5 gallon tank?
One occupied layer, and the choice is which layer. Four records clear five gallons on their own and none of them clears it alongside another: a betta at the surface, a pea puffer in mid water and species only, a cherry shrimp colony on the substrate, or a nerite snail, which clears two.
How many fish in a 20 gallon tank?
Every record on this site clears twenty gallons long, which makes it the first volume where the constraint stops being water and becomes footprint. Thirty by twelve inches is what makes the floor usable for the bottom dwellers; a tall twenty holds the same water and does not.
How many guppies in a 10 gallon tank?
The guppy record states a trio or more and a 10 gallon tank minimum, and guppies are the one livebearer in this build, and it does not state a maximum. That is the honest limit of what our sources give: a number for the floor and nothing for the ceiling. What the record does carry is the reason the ratio matters more than the count, which is that a male to female ratio is a welfare figure rather than a stocking one.
How many cherry shrimp in a 5 gallon tank?
The cherry shrimp record states a colony rather than a number, because four of its five sources give no density at all. One does: Shrimpy Business publishes five to ten shrimp per gallon, which puts a five gallon tank between twenty five and fifty animals. That is one source, so treat it as a single opinion rather than a consensus, and remember a colony arrives at its own number without asking.
How many nerite snails per gallon?
Not recorded, and that is the answer rather than a gap we are hiding. No source we hold for the nerite snail states a group size or a density, so this tool will not print one. What the record does state is a two gallon minimum, which is the smallest figure on this site, and that the eggs will not hatch in fresh water, so the population does not grow on its own.
How many pea puffers in a 10 gallon tank?
The pea puffer record states one male to two or three females, species only, on both of its sources. Species only is the part that decides a ten gallon: the volume is not the constraint, the refusal to share the tank is.
How many corydoras catfish in a 10 gallon tank?
Six or more of one species, per the corydoras catfish record, and ten gallons is the stated minimum. Of one species is the clause people miss: six fish made of three species is not a group of six, it is three groups of two, and the record does not support it.
Do plants let you keep more fish in a tank?
On one record here, a source says yes to a count and no to a volume. Aquarium Co-Op gives higher pea puffer numbers when the tank is densely planted, three in a 10 gallon and six or seven in a twenty, and the mechanism it describes is sight breaks rather than filtration. What no source we hold does is lower a minimum tank because the tank is planted, so this stocking calculator will not either.
What is the smallest community fish tank these records support?
Ten gallons, and a community of two: one surface fish and one group. Below that the records support a single occupied layer. Above twenty gallons the volume stops constraining anything and what remains are the refusals, which do not improve with a bigger tank.
Why does the calculator refuse some answers?
Because the record behind it has no figure. The nerite snail is the clearest case: not one of our sources states a group size or a density for it, so any number this tool printed would be ours rather than theirs. The record says not recorded, and so does the tool.
Is one inch of fish per gallon a real rule?
It appears in none of the sources we compile from. It also ignores floor space, the layer a species occupies and the difference between a 0.8 inch tetra and a 4 inch loach, which is why this tool uses stated group sizes instead.
Can I keep two schools in a 10 gallon?
Not from these records. Ten gallons supports a surface fish and one group. Two groups plus a betta is where the water quality story starts, and no source we use supports it at that volume.
Does a bigger tank mean more fish?
Above 20 gallons the records stop constraining the count, so the honest answer is that the limit becomes how many groups you want to maintain. That is not the same as a license to double a school.
What heater setting works for a mixed tank?
Take the overlap of every record in the tank. For these six species that overlap is 74 to 80 °F, and 78 °F sits inside all of them while keeping the betta near where it thrives.
Why is the same species listed twice as an alternative?
Because one layer holds one group. Kuhli loaches or corydoras, ember tetras or rasboras: the alternatives are the same slot, not two additions.
